It depends on your precise financial situation, but I'd go with Texas.

It depends on how you define "not really". I'm pretty sure DC, CA and NY are available to top students at Texas.holybartender wrote:Texas: not really.dvd wrote:Can someone tell me about national portability at the two schools?

I mean, it depends on where you place in your class. Will the student at median be going to NY? I doubt it.

If you have good reasons to attend Minn, I'd say go for it. That's at least $60k in debt you won't have. A friend there is a decent reason.
In terms of portability, they're both pretty regional. Texas may be slightly more national, but most of the class is going to stay in Texas, and that's where its alumni base is. Top of the class at either school will have different opportunities, and probably not all too different.
Obviously you need to consider which area of the country you'd prefer to be in here. Northern midwest or Texas? You're likely to stay in either for a while.
May update more later. CLass is out.

Congrats on getting in. To be honest, if you want to work in the South/Southwest area, then go with Texas. Midwest, then Minnesota. I don't know if you are in-state for Texas, but in any case, the debt for going there isn't bad at all, especially for a T20. As cool as it is to have a friend in Minnesota (I have two 1Ls), it's probably best to go with region, as it should be easy enough to make new ones.
Let me know through PM your final decision. If you go to Minn, we might have a beer together.

ITE I'm not sure what kind of class rank is necessary to get the national effects of the school (better than median for sure), but Texas seems to be substantially more national than Minn.cendien wrote:If you have good reasons to attend Minn, I'd say go for it. According to LSN in 07-08 Texas had 390 firms at OCI (41 NY, 34 DC, 72 CA) while Minnesota had 117 (10 NY, 8 DC, 11 CA). That's a pretty big difference.

Re: Texas with Scholarship or Minnesota for free?
Do you have any regional preferences? How do you fare in the cold? I'll be attending Minnesota despite the fact that I hate the cold, because the Twin Cities are awesome 7-8 months of the year, and bearable the other 4-5 (walkways help). I'm excited to be going to MN in the fall, and would be even more so if I had a full ride. I don't really know Austin, but I would imagine the cost of living is higher than MPLS/STP. $21,000/yr is a lot of money, but I have to admit-- if I were in your shoes, this would be a really tough decision for me, and Minnesota is my home state.dvd wrote:So, I have already deposited my $200 at Texas, but I just got in off the waitlist at Minnesota today, and was told I would be receiving a full tuition scholarship. I got similar offers from other schools, but they are the best school (if you consider Minn > UIUC) to offer me so much. I am pretty set on Texas, since I already deposited, but the idea of graduating with minimal debt is quite appealing. Texas would cost ~ $21,000 a year. I am still waiting to get the email from Minnesota with the exact amount, but the guy on the phone said it was a full scholarship. Opinions?

21k does sound like a lot, but you will certainly pay it off over your lifetime...it's not crippling. Plus, everyone says Austin is SICK! I don't know about job opportunities but I think Texas would have a smidgen more national prestige than MN.
But the Twin Cities are pretty sweet and MN is my first choice so I have only good things to say.
I think i'd give the nod to TX but it's awfully close

Unless you're excited about living and working in Minn after law school, go for Texas. It will open more doors and is probably a better school. And Austin can be like a 24/7 party if you're a student and you want to go that way.

I'm in the exact same predicament. Wednesday, Minnesota called and offered a full ride and know I am doubting Texas. Let me know what you decide.

Great to hear. When is your deposit due, btw?dvd wrote:It really depends on your personal situation, but I loved Minnesota/Minneapolis. Safe, clean, with a generally nice/helpful population. All the good parts of a big city, without the crime and unemployment. I haven't totally decided yet, but chances are I will be at UMN in the fall.osucowboy08 wrote:I'm in the exact same predicament.
