Re: LSU 2010
Yeah I've read some of that. However the state has modified their system over the years. In some countries that have a traditional Civil Law system the judge is almost like a prosecutor, not the impartial referee like in common law. I don't think this is so much the case in LA. What I read was that in common law Appellate courts review a case based on findings of law, not findings of fact, which the jury is supposed to make. In LA an Appellate court can review a case based on findings of law as well as fact. So if they think the jury just got the conviction wrong, not based on any procedural or other laws being violated, just because they read the evidence wrong, the appellate court can overturn the ruling. I could be wrong though.

Hey guys! I am an UG student at LSU, so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask/PM me!
I also have quite a few friends at the law school (1L-3L), so anything I do not know, I can ask them.

Any big complaints about Civil Law or the extra semester? What type of law are most of the students interested in? Where are the best clubs (i.e. where do the hottest girls go to party)?suthernbelle453 wrote:Hey guys! Re: LSU 2010
haha well I will answer these to the best of my abilities. I hear zero complaints about the civil law portion of the law education. I, too, had some concerns about it because I don't know that I want to practice in Louisiana, so I wanted to make sure that I would have the education and knowledge to go else where. From what I understand, you get an education with both types of law, and you get a degree for both kinds of laws.
As for the what the students are interested in, it all just depends on the student. It's very spread out and diverse. One of my friends wants to do litigation and another wants to do contracts. It all just depends on you and what you're good at/passionate about.
Now, for the most important questions, going out.
I know for a fact that our law school is VERY social. In the fall, the law school (or a program of the law school) will rent out one of the bars in Tigerland (Fred's) for all of the law students to go and hang out/drink. I know that each section does their own thing (like Section 3 Thursdays at a bar downtown) too, and that a couple of the student organizations organize social events (bus trips to New Orleans bars, etc.). We have our centralized bar scene, where a lot of the undergrads go, which is called Tigerland, and has about 5 or 6 bars. There is also Bogies (predominantly Greek), Mellow Mushroom and Shady's by Tigerland. There are a ton of bars downtown that are 21+, which is good when you don't want to deal with younger kids asking you to buy their drinks because their underage. There was also just a new bar built on Perkins Road, called The Bulldog, and it is VERY popular. Law students can also purchase football tickets (not usually 1Ls), and I advise everyone to buy them. There's nothing like an LSU football game, and the law school has it's own tailgate.
I hope I answered all your questions.
Let me know if not or if you have any other questions.

Re: LSU 2010
suthernbelle, so I've been accepted into LSU and I've decided to visit next weekend. I have a few friends who go to LSU undergrad so I'll be staying with them. Do you have any recommendations for things that I should do or places that I should go to get a good feel for the school and Baton Rouge in general?

Just for anyone's information-- heard today that I got waitlisted at LSU, and I have to say that I am thrilled. With numbers that aren't very good, I was just curious if anyone had any specific tips for getting off the LSU waitlist, or possibly one in general. Thanks again!

Re: LSU 2010
I got an email that said they extended the deadline to April 15th. LSU, for the moment, is my front runner school. If I haven't heard back from some other schools I am interested in by March 20th or so I will likely send in the first admission check.

Re: LSU 2010
Hey guys,
I have actually heard (somewhere) that LSU is trying to get rid of the extra summer of school work because it makes their 1L's less competitive (not getting job experience, etc). Has anyone else heard this and, if so, are they making any progress?

Re: LSU 2010
Looks like LSU students still have to take overall more credit hours than most students. So is the summer course no optional in order to get the Civil Law degree? How does this affect the education provided for Civl and Common Law?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
