Re: c/o 2019 Applicant Compendium (2015 - 2016)
This is all great advice. I struggled with test anxiety and am happy to talk about how I approached the issue if you want to PM me, mornincounselor.jettison63 wrote:A few things:mornincounselor wrote:I don't think I can prepare any better than I have for the LSAT. It came down to severe anxiety the night before preventing me from getting any sleep whatsoever and a weirdly phrased double layer sequencing game that I couldn't figure out in time. I have petitioned LSAC for a fourth take, if I am blessed with the opportunity I will consult a doctor to help with the anxiety and an LSAT expert to analyze my 7sage graphs. I completely self-studied, and I've done and reviewed every PT including Februaries and Indian LSATs. I already took a full year off to just retake the LSAT I really can't see myself doing it again.jettison63 wrote:
Maybe GULC part-time?
You could also hold off and take again later.....but I think that depends on what your study/prep methods have been so far and if they leave room for improvement...
Also what are your career ambitions?
My GPA (3.2<x<3.29) even combined with a 170-180 range doesn't increase my chances all that much sadly. According to mylsn it doesn't even increase my scholarships much either.
I don't have a good answer to the specific career goals question.
1. In re: the anxiety, this can likely be overcome. Was tackling this part of your strategy earlier? If so, what did you do?
2. Did you drill? This is what has made a huge difference for me. IE: I felt "pretty good" about LG in PTs in the past. This time around, I drilled 100+ LG on their own. Before "pretty good" did not always mean completing LG for me. I now always do, and have finished it in some instances with about five minutes left.
3. I don't know your LSAT score, so I can't say much about where you'd get in. But I'd hesitate to discount yourself too much. Also, mylsn likelihoods are drawn from data pulled from lawschoolnumbers which has means/medians/ranges a bit higher than the actual data from law schools. (I apologize if you already knew that, not trying to be patronizing here)
4. If you aren't 100% on your career goals within law, look at going to some of the schools where you can get a full ride. Is your chance at legal employment better coming out of Columbia than say, UCBoulder? Yes. So do extensive research on those schools you can get into with significant scholarship money and their legal, full time employment stats. There are excellent regional schools that you should not overlook.
Think of the whole picture. Do you need a law degree to get where you want to go? And because you mentioned it in your post, it might be worth asking yourself if a legal career is something you merely think you want to do because it's an idea you've had about yourself for years and years, or is it what you truly want? Where do you want to live? Also, what income do you want/need in five years? (Calculate this in consideration of the cost of living where you'd like to be.) Say a legal career is what you want, if a regional school has a 9 month post-grad legal employment rate of 85%, are you going to be confident in your ability to be in that 85%? Do you need a T-14 to get you where you want to go?
If you don't have particular career goals that dictate a huge advantage of a T-14 over others (ie: big law) AND you do your homework and see great regional schools that can get you where you want to go, I don't see why you need T-14. Yes, T-14 opens doors. I do not deny that. But it's all about your career, one that is rewarding and important to you and pays bills. There are crappy lawyers from the best schools, and excellent ones from schools not ranked as highly. The same goes for people who find their careers satisfying. If you can find a route that works for you [legal or otherwise], take it. T-14 or not. But watch what you pay for your degree, and watch employment rates--the ones that refer to long term jobs in the legal field. None of this Brooklyn Law business.
All of this to say, good luck! I'm sure you'll find a way to be successful in your career, legal or otherwise. I hope this has been helpful and that someone benefitted from my insomnia. Also, if you're able to retake, I'd probably stay off the waiters threads if you happen to be on them. Christ, my blood pressure rose just perusing them, they'd have zero calming effect for someone anxious about the LSAT.

Thanks boo.
And seriously, I couldn't stand them when I was in college and now it's just worse. Too much of an old soul. I went to a bar last night with my friend who I ran with since we both took today off, and I spent a large chunk of the time glaring at the students there wondering why they weren't home studying for midterms...
