Something else I wanted to comment on was that CLS mentioned in the deferral letter that this years early decision applicant pool has been stronger than ever before. Though the program doesn't exactly have some decades long history from which to really draw great statistics from, it would seem to run counter to all the expectations that this would be the most generous cycle since the downturn of the legal market/LSAT takers. I've tried to make the leap in my mind as to what would cause that, what with all the strange and out of range (typically at the lower end) acceptances we have seen from other schools that would make this the case at CLS. Maybe more people feel they have a shot and are ED'ng to Columbia, whereas in other circumstances they would have ED'd somewhere in the MPV range?

Tough break man, I'm sure my deferral is in the queue.

They actually told KevinP they expect more than 9,000 apps this year. Last year it was down around 8,000. Hopefully CLS is just estimating high and will be forced to correct later on in the cycle.

Congrats! You didn't have to do ED though- you would have definitely gotten in RD (and possibly into HYS too) with those numbers!

Unless this is radically different from all previous cycles, the last week of January seems most likely.

Yeah and pretty much anyone who has their app in by the December LSAT score release date will be considered for that first wave of VCEs

Almost my friend; they actually told me 8,000, and they had 7,459 applications last year. I don't know if they said they had the strongest application pool, but among the strongest, which doesn't tell us much. Here's the direct quote:
"This year’s Early Decision applicant pool was among the most highly qualified in the history of the program.
Thus, competition for early admission was again exceptionally keen this year. We anticipate
that, altogether, almost 8,000 candidates will apply."

Considering December had a ~14 percent decrease in test takers from 42k to 36k, and --Nationally, "as of Nov. 25, applicants to law school were down 16.3 percent," said Wendy Margolis, director of communications for LSAC. "Last year at that time, roughly 25 percent of the applicant count was in."--*, I would expect ~6.5k apps for Columbia.

So, since is it really APRIL when they review our applications again? Isn't that pretty much at or near many other schools deadlines for initial deposits? Or do they say april as a backstop more so than as when they are really going to take a look?

FWIW I am going to email them tonight and hope for a response soon (tomorrow) as to what is realistic. It would just seem that to apply early in ED, expressing paramount interest, and then to be considered only after 95% of the class is filled would be.. I don't know... unfair to a degree that is beyond what other schools deferrals set one up for (i.e. Cornell says February I think)

im shocked you were deferred. but you're a lock for NYU RD, in my opinion.
