Honestly just recently started putting the apostrophe in at all and just put it where I normally change the inflection. I haven't seen it printed much so didn't even think about consulting anything.forum_user wrote:speaking of starting shit, what the fuck is up with your spelling of y'all dudeDr.Degrees_Cr.Cash wrote:Warned ya'll I was gonna start some shit to farm those posts

It's obviously **y'all**, because you-all. Also acceptable "yall" because English grammar and punctuation are largely fluid concepts and often an oppressive tool of establishing cultural hierarchies.
However, it's never **ya'll**. I feel dumb even typing it out that way.
When you put it like that it makes perfect sense, fortunately I am a proud american that will not be swayed by your rational thinking and will stick with how I do it. Past that, no idea why. Rural PA taught me to spell it like thatHennessyVSOP wrote:Here's a debate I can get into.thatlawlkid wrote: #teamya'll

Or it's a contraction of ya (how are ya doin) and all, ergo ya'llforum_user wrote:TCRHennessyVSOP wrote:Here's a debate I can get into.thatlawlkid wrote: #teamya'll

like it's a contraction of you all. Who tf says "ya all;" that would be like ya'all, which would really get contracted to something sounding like yuh'll. Whereas y'all = you all, where you drop the ooo sound.
Other fun variations: y'all'll = you all will; y'all's = possessive; all y'all = every one of you

Except "ya" is pronounced "yuh." Hence wrt "ya'll" [sic] you drop the "ahhhh" from ahhhll and you're left with "yuh" + "ll" if you say ya'll. Hence it becomes "yuh'll" as poorly elaborated in my post aboveDr.Degrees_Cr.Cash wrote:Or it's a contraction of ya (how are ya doin) and all, ergo ya'llforum_user wrote:TCRHennessyVSOP wrote:Here's a debate I can get into.thatlawlkid wrote: #teamya'll

I'm not sure if it's regional (I'm from the northeast so I'd need a whole thread to go through all of the regional grammar mistakes we make here) but one thing that a lot of people do is use the word itch instead of scratch.airwrecka wrote:Speaking of grammar, what the common grammar errors people from your part of the country make?
In my high school, there were RAMPANT problems with borrow & lend. People apparently don't know that lend is a word, and use the word borrow to mean both borrow and lend. To this day, I think most of my hometown uses these words incorrectly, even those who have left and gone to university/college/whatever.
Also, in Minnesota, "unthaw" is apparently a word. My dad uses it, the attorney I work for uses it...it's kind of hilarious. Unthaw=thaw. Not sure how it started
+1 "ya'll" is an abominationHennessyVSOP wrote:Here's a debate I can get into.thatlawlkid wrote: #teamya'll

I'm not really opposed to it on moral grounds, but from a practical standpoint it just seems dumb as hell.poptart123 wrote:so who here is pro-border wall??

I really draw the line on arbitrary bans on guns that look bad, like banning anything with a bayonut lug, muzzle break, pistol grip, collapsible stock, etc. The constitution is pretty clear on gun ownership and the purpose of it. I simply do not trust a government official more with a gun than I trust myself with it, and since the government isn't limiting themselves, why should I? Gun registries are also VERY bad.
On the y'all vs. ya'll vs. yall debate, y'all and yall are both fine. Ya'll is not, as it would be a contraction of you will.
