1. If you're a non-T14 applicant, what schools are best to negotiate with WUSTL? It's the second highest ranked school to which I've been accepted, so I don't have some T14 offers to leverage a bunch of money. Instead I'll have stuff like UGA, W&M, Wake Forest, etc (with $$). Would they just laugh at lower ranked offers and stick to their initial offer of $51K?
2. With regard to seat deposit deadlines, are schools willing to push them back? My first deadlines start April 1/April 15, which doesn't leave a ton of time to negotiate.
+1 im curious too.
1. Wustl was the highest ranked school I was accepted at, so I know where you're coming from here. At the local state school, I spoke to some of the 2012 grads who went on full rides. There were 5 in that class. 3 worked for large firms, 1 had a federal clerkship, and 1 was in shitlaw. (His classmates said he was lazy.) By that measure, I had an 80% shot at a desirable outcome, and that's how I used the much lower-ranked school for leverage.
2. I'm sure you could get an extension on the first deadline, but I ended up putting down 3 first round deposits. I pissed away about $450 that way. The second deposit deadline is more firm, but not drop dead. If you ask correctly, you should be able to get a week or two. This will allow them to see what their budget looks like after a bunch of people withdraw, and they have a better idea of what their budget looks like.
Start early, end late. Every time you ask for more money, a school is going to take a week or two to get back to you. That time adds up quick, and pretty soon you're up against deposit deadlines. These can be pushed, but definitely start sooner rather than later.
