I think the graduate housing is the best option for me. The off-campus options are either too expensive or too far from the school.

I think the graduate housing is the best option for me. The off-campus options are either too expensive or too far from the school.

I'm looking at main street apartments. I have a car and they have attached garages so the drive is only ten minutes and they are close to grocery stores and restaurants. Plus with a roommate its like 600 or less.

I just can't do the old buildings like grad plex because of my allergies. Living in a dorm there for 3 years undergrad nearly killed me.

Unfortunately, snail mail is the way they initially let you know. A few days after you receive your package, they will send you an email.

I was on spring break when I saw that they had made a decision about it, but it says on the website that they won't let you know via email or phone. That same day, I had received an email from my college telling me I had a package at the post office. I called over the the post office to ask where my package was from, and it was Notre Dame! Hopefully you will hear soon -- good luck!

from what I understand, you won't want to go anywhere outside of the campus. I've only driven thru, but South Bend kinda sucks.

there are now a few restaurants across the street thanks to eddy street commons, but yup get to a grocery store you will need a vehicle but chances are there will be other students with cars who won't mind making group grocery runs. there is a bids that goes straight from campus to both chicago airports and cabs are ready to get especially on weekends but be wary of absurd price hikes on game day weekends. I think as long as you can make a friend with a car for grocery runs there really isn't much else that you need a car for.

there is also a transpo bus that comes to both the library circle on the north end of campus which is basically across a huge parking lot from the grad plex abd main circle which is where the law school is. I know it goes to the mall but not sure where else.

For those wondering about off campus housing, I would consider Clover Village Apartments, Irish Row, or Clover Ridge Apartments. I forget if these were mentioned in the admit packet, but they are all great options in terms of price and location. All three of these are located directly across Tyckenham, which is the road that forms the eastern edge of campus. I am an undergrad at ND right now, and I live in Clover Village, which is literally right across the street from campus- I stand on my patio and can watch lacrosse and soccer games. The law school is literally like a 3 minute bike ride away. I pay $500 for a two bedroom, and single bedrooms are around $800.

As far as a car goes, I would definitely recommend having one! You'll want it, and parking is free with rent (obviously, its south bend). There is actually quite a bit to do around the south bend area, but you need a car to do it. There are a surprising amount of restaurants and shops around. There is even a small zoo! I can only speak from my own experience, but I can honestly say I don't think I could survive here without a car at this point (granted, I spent my first three years at ND without one... but thats before I knew what I was missing).

Essentially everything both of these people have said is the truth. The whole "Clover Cluster" of apts is very close to campus, pretty affordable, and near the Eddy Commons side (which is getting more and more popular). They are, however, also dominated by heavy partiers. Not a judgment call, just a reality. I would say if being on/close to campus is very important, living in the graduate housing is the best bet. You can find some pretty good places to live that are within 5-10min driving distance, too. Some people like the idea of being on/close to campus, some like being more removed from the campus in their "spare" time.

If you are not going to have a car, I would strongly suggest living on-campus. You'll be able to do what you need to do regardless and mostly everyone will have a car even living on-campus, so it won't be a huge wrinkle. If you're going to live off-campus, having a car is almost mandatory.

There are things to do in South Bend and a car certainly helps. A decent museum (for South Bend), some OK parks, and the dunes and lake Michigan within reasonable distance. The restaurants are generally not that great in SB, though. Good options for greasy spoon and breakfast joints, but if you're used to the diversity and quality of a bigger city...sorry, homie. There are some decent places, overall, but plenty of sub-par and fast-food restaurants.

The zoo is terrible. That is all.

What?! The zoo is not terrible! You can get SO CLOSE to the lions (so close in fact one of them was able to pee on my girlfriend, 'claiming his territory' hah).

Seriously though, the atmosphere of Clover Village (where I live) is not like the former (infamous) Turtle Creek. Nearly everyone in my building is a graduate student, and it is ALWAYS quite, not only in my building, but on the Clover Village property generally. I do not deny that there might be a higher concentration of undergrads here than at other, further away, complexes, but it definitely doesn't have a 'party' atmosphere- at least CV doesn't... I tend to think Clover Ridge has more of that party atmosphere now. But, I can only speak from my experience, and my experience has been one of peach and tranquility!

Re- The Zoo: Take a girl there and I guarantee it will be a great date.

If South Bend fell off the planet, I'd be one of the last to cry about it. But animal shelter>prison>killself? Not quite. You definitely can get claustrophobia here, but there are indeed better things to do than...that.

lol. I'm 100% sure that the town my undergard (3 hours away from ND) is in is ten times worse than south bend. we have a total of 5 restaurants in town and not even a single fast food restaurant within walking distance (except for a really nasty McDonalds). the neighborhood near my school is also one of the most depressing places in the country. Our economy depends on a giant walmart and some random chemical companies (worst kind of industry)

south bend will be a heaven for me
