I get it. The Gentleman's thread is meant to be tongue in cheek. People in it are talking about whiskey and beer, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that.

The problem is that on another level, it's trivializing the fact that there are certain groups that do face discrimination in the legal profession (and elsewhere- but we'll just focus on the legal profession). These groups - women, people of color, LGBTQ people - face or prepare to face certain issues in applying for law school and entering the legal profession that other groups simply don't. And it's perfectly understandable that these underrepresented groups want to have a place to talk about them.

When a group that really isn't facing any sort of discrimination starts a thread mocking a legitimate one - even if it's done lightheartedly, which I'm sure the Gentleman's thread is is - things starts to get dicey. As I said, it's not like the people in it are saying anything bad, and there are no ill intentions. But let's say there were a non-URM (aka Straight White Guys) thread/forum created to poke fun at the URM forum. I'd like to think that no one ITT would be posting in it even if the content were all puppies and Parks and Rec and tasty liquor. It would simply be in poor taste. It's really no different with the male/female threads.
Also, not to disturb the newfound peace (I love peace!), but I'd like to gently bump this so any guys who choose to participate in the Gentleman's thread can at least consider our perspective first. If you still want to join the thread that's your prerogative, but there are plenty of other places (like the Lounge) to talk about whiskey and cigars - after all, the thread has absolutely nothing to do with law school acceptances, waitlists, or denials.

And Based, you know I love you dearly, but a link to the thread soooo doesn't belong where it is in the OP next to the Ladies' and LGBTQ threads.

Barls had a better post (like last page), but basically just saying it wasn't appropriate to have it sitting next to the Women's/LGBTQ thread. Because those groups are actually underrepresented in law.
I thought the point of discussion boards was just to discuss? I mean it it was a section for underrepresented groups I could understand, but its just a forum for people applying to law school. If people want to talk about certain aspects they share and are applying together let them have a thread. Maybe I'll start a conservative thread, or a people who drive kias and are applying to law school thread.
The thing is, the LGBTQ and Women's threads are talking about certain characteristics they share that generate actual, legitimate concerns about issues they may face in applying to law school and practicing law. I think a Conservative thread would be totally appropriate considering the liberal lean of most top law schools; a people who drive kias thread would be silly and irrelevant.

Ok I totally understand if you are saying it is only mocking the womens thread. That is lame, but I didn't take it that way and I am not participating for that purpose. Hence my initial post there saying what I would want it to be if I was going to participate, because I am only there for that purpose.
Just want to say +1 to Gen, I realize now that the optics of it weren't good and I agree with what barls wrote, but I don't think anyone meant to offend by it whatsoever.
Yeah, I totally understand that you all were participating just because you were interested in chatting about certain shared interests and not to make fun of women, but I do think it's important to point out that the thread had implications that you might not have realized.

Also, I do think someone - Fips - meant to offend; pretty sure it was created specifically to rattle Hilde's cage, and they way it's titled is obviously mimicking the lady's thread. Not saying that the rest of y'all who posted in it felt that way, but to the ladies the original intention of the thread was clear - even if Fips meant it in a trolly way as opposed to an actually-believing-it way.

I agree, but my point was I just see these threads as places to talk about whatever. I mean sure some of the school specific threads are talking about actual issues, must mostly we just shitpoast. I see nothing wrong with a thread directing the shitpoasting to one general area of discussion, like gentlemenly things. But if you start with the premise that they should be for discussing legitimate issues of concern for law school applicants, then ok I see your point. I think we just disagree on the point of these threads.
I suppose all the other threads, even if they contain shitposting, do at least have a grain of law school applications purpose and provide a forum for real concerns, even if that function isn't always used? which is entirely lacking from the gentlemen's thread

I must admit I thought Heidi would be a bit annoyed by it, but since I didn't see anything wrong with it and thought she would only object because it was a mens thread, I was a little open to a friendly cage rattle. Knowing now the reasons y'all were offended I apologize, because as I said, in no way did I construe it to make fun or belittle the women's thread or the issues y'all have in applying to law schools.
Thanks for that, General! :)
basedvulpes wrote:I totally recognize that and apologize for it, which is why I took it off the OP. I guess the only caveat I want to leave is that I don't want everything I post on this forum to be taken as an expression of my ability for critical thought and as a representation of my greater worldview. This is a pretty lighthearted place where mistakes are inevitably going to be made, and I don't want that to become a reflection of who you think I actually am.
Yeah, I didn't hold it against you! :) I still stand by pointing things out when people inadvertently trivialize others' legitimate concerns, but I have enormous respect for people who are open and don't get defensive when they're called out on it (see: you, and General's post quoted above!) And obviously EVERYONE has biases and says stupid things, so I hope y'all don't hesitate to call me out on them when I deserve it.
