am sold on L&C and am trying to figure out where to live. I checked out Sellwood, Lake Oswego and areas around the law school. I stayed with a friend that lives in Richmond right near Hawthorne. It is a very cool area but would like to live closer to school. For any of you locals, did I miss any areas?

Portland is a fantastic city and I can't wait to move there. I live in Austin, TX right now and I have to say the Keep Austin Weird does not hold a candle to Keep Portland Weird.

I just received my acceptance to L&C today, and I am very excited. However, I obviously missed out on the festivities last weekend. I'm wondering if those of you who went, especially those who have already decided to attend, could provide some of the highlights of L&C that made you choose it. Anything you want to share will help. Thanks!

For me, it came down to atmosphere. Of all the options I have, most of which are similarly ranked or at least regional schools, L&C is easily the most comfortable. I feel like I could happily spend 3 years there. Additionally, being a Portland local makes it super convenient for me. That said, with the cost of school, I'm not going to let locality be the determining factor unless I KNOW I will be happy, comfortable and have strong opportunities. As it is, L&C is a great school with strong faculty, programs and comfortable facilities.

I was held in the middle of Feb... I talked to the admissions office a couple days ago to set up a campus visit, and they said that they would review held applicants and start making decisions pretty soon after 4-15. I hope I get in, because it is very likely that I would attend. I was held at WUSTL yesterday, but their email was so much more optimistic. Like "we would very much like to offer you a spot, but we are overcommitted at the moment. Tomorrow seat deposits our due, and if any spots open up we will contact you very soon."

The L&C one is kind of dreary. I guess they amount to the same thing, though.

A 176 and L&C is your top choice? Is there something holding you to Portland? Apply next cycle in September/October and you'll probably get into a T20, or a T30 with a scholarship. Or hell, you'll get into L&C with an excellent scholarship. GPA focused schools won't let you in with a 2.6, but you'll definitely get something. If you've been out of school for a while, your chances will go up even more. Splitters like you are hard to predict, but that 176 will definitely snag you a good first tier school.

If you're dead set on L&C this year, you should write them a LOCI now, in response to their email. You might also want to call them and ask about deferment options, and if you could get priority treatment for a scholarship for next year.

I disagree with the previous post concerning getting a scholarship at a T20 or T30 with a 176 2.6 GPA.

I doubt a T20 would give a scholarship based upon the lower GPA. Had the applicant applied earlier to L&C perhaps it would have given a scholarship though. A high LSAT can make up for low GPA, but a 2.6 is not going to be attractive to a T20 school that sees a good number of 170+ appplicants. Perhaps getting a scholarship at a T30 is possible. They might take the dip in GPA for the boost in LSAT numbers.

i would look into deferring till next cycle. You will likely get offered a free ride with a 176 if you reapply in September. But for this cycle, the money pools seem a bit more dried up. At ASD, they straight up told everyone that they could get their seat deposit deadline extended to see if more money frees up--which i'd bet that at least 90% of admits did.

That's great. L&C is an excellent school. You might want to look at the hard data on employment prospects from a T30 versus L&C, however, just to put things in perspective. Add to that the high probability of a large L&C scholarship if you had applied earlier, and I still stand by my comments.

I hope you get a good scholarship this cycle once they redistribute funds. If it's less than half tuition, however, you may want to consider your options for next cycle. Good luck!

That OP never said whether he or she was tied to Portland or the Northwest - - or what his or her interests are. It is a possiblility that this person could have a family in the Northwest, and wants to practice enviro law... where L&C is one the the best...

lol....stuff together? if you say so I withdrew two months ago and I've had like 4 calls from L&C students; they really need to update their phone lists. On a related note, they kept sending me literature for weeks after with withdrawl. I thought this school was supposed to be environmentally conscious

I think that employment statistics can be skewed toward higher ranked schools for one reason that not a lot of people consider.

Students at higher ranked schools tend to be more driven. That is, they network more, and they work harder to find jobs. I say that as a 1L at Lewis and Clark who sees how many first year students simply resign themselves to taking summer classes instead of finding legal employment without really looking. I am not saying this is the majority of students, but I know that it is true of many. They simply think, "I'll look around, but if I don't find something, I'll just take classes." I think that some people do not realize the importance of networking even in your first year if possible. Students at higher ranked schools, being generally more driven in the first place, tend to focus more on finding a job.

For example, look at BYU, it is ranked 41, but they have great employment statistics for where they are ranked. Why? The LDS network is already set up for them, and LDS kids tend to be very driven (especially those at BYU).

I applied to L&C right at the deadline (3/1) and when I talked to someone in Admissions last Monday (3/29) he said that my application "just went into review, but that the panel doesn't meet until later in the week, so it could still be a couple more weeks until I hear from them." However, I checked my online applicant status this morning and while my status is the same ("application file complete"), the current status date has changed to 4/1. Does anyone know what this might mean?

I believe it means that there has been some sort of activity with your application. Either you sent in an update or they pulled your file for review. It appears to be the latter in your case. For me, it took about 10 days for them to decide on my app after my date changed. However, some people have had 3 current status changes before getting a decision. good luck.

Forget about the status checker once it has gone to "file complete." It won't help you. Instead, try to log into the admitted students page on the L&C website.

I think I'm going to wait to send in a deposit until I hear back about scholarship money later this month. I really wish I could go ahead and say yes to L&C, but financially, it's kind of hard to at this point. I'm going to send in a deposit to UO and hope for good news about money from L&C.
