I've heard it's been a "mild winter" and the forecast I'm seeing predicts temps in 20-30s. My main question is whether snow boots with good traction are a must or if I can get away with boots marketed as "waterproof" and wool socks
I grew up in Chicago and while late February is usually pretty cold, snow boots aren't really necessary. The city does get some snow, but it's usually not a ton and all of the streets/sidewalks should be plowed so you shouldn't have to walk in the snow at all. And like you mentioned, this year has been pretty mild so there might not be any snow at all. The cold can really be bitter though, so dress in layers and bring a warm coat and you'll be fine!
This is late, but I would bring a pair of waterproof boots just in case! You never know what can happen! But you should be fine with boots and socks, but don't forget scarves/gloves/hat/etc.
Thank you!! The forecast has apparently improved (mid-to-high 30s), but I'm still going to bundle up. Hopefully the winter-hardened Chicagoans don't judge me too much

I bought a coat online for the trip/future cold weather and it took them two days to start shipping it, now the expected delivery date is end-of-day on the day I have a morning flight to DC. Booooo.

Great idea!

I'll add a book one after work today. (Prod me if I forget, I'm super lazy in the evenings.)
And in the meantime, y'all should give me suggestions about answers to the poll.
Boop.

Haha, you won't be judged! The cool (no pun intended) thing about Chicago is that there's always a range of outfits...for some people, 40 degrees is shorts weather; for others, it's down coats.
PS. The wind can be HORRIBLE--it's almost pushed me over a few times today so please please please be careful and have fun in the windy city! Also, try deep dish while you're here!

I feel like you'd get judged more for being underdressed

You should be fine - last time I visited, I didn't really check the weather and definitely could have brought a lighter coat. I felt a bit silly but, hey.
Also, +180 on deep dish. My personal favorites are Pequod's and Gino's, but Lou's and Giordano's are also very popular.

Giordano's > Lou's.

Giordano's > Lou's.

Two women on my last flight to Chicago were saying the places they'd tried in Chicago, but they still preferred Uno's.

I know this will be controversial, but Pizzeria Due is one of my favorite places for deep dish in Chicago.

My waiter there overhead me talking about Giordano's and almost kicked me out :/ but yes, I do think that Due and Uno are probably the most famous and have a good atmosphere.

Just found this thread. How delightful! I currently live in Chicago, and I have to cast my vote to Pequad's for the best deep dish pizza. Though if you are visiting UChicago there's a Giordanos here and it's also pretty good.
Also, I currently live in Hyde Park pretty close to the law school (currently working at UChicago). I have a free air mattress and a very friendly cat for those that might want to visit UChicago but don't want to pay for a hotel, just pm me. I'm also happy to recommend other things to see/do in Chicago! I moved here about 6 months ago and am loving it so far.

What a great idea!! I live in Boston and have an air mattress and friendly pup (though only one bathroom for the current 6 people, bear that in mind) -- happy to host for Harvard, BC, BU, Northeastern, Suffolk...

Yes I love their bags! I've had one for over a year now and it's held up wonderfully. The organized pockets inside make life soooo much better

I got the mini because it comes with a cross body strap, but that doesn't have a built in computer case. My 13inch macbook fits fine though in the main compartment. Im v happy with it!! I think it will be perfect for NYC. Plus I just got a parka that rolls up into this tiny bag like magic so I can keep that in there, or a pair of comfortable shoes!

Oh perfect! I thought my Macbook was 15 inches for some reason but I looked at my system preferences and it's actually 13! Still not convinced, but that means I can get the mini sized bag! Thank you so much for sharing!!
The mini is cheaper and I think looks more normal on my body too. The "13 inch tote" is actually 15ish inches long, the "13 inch" part of the title just refers to the built in computer case size. I assume you could fit a 15inch computer in the "13 inch tote" if you put it in the main compartment.
That tote was just a bit too large for my personal preferences. The mini is substantially roomier than my Kate Spade Hayden purse but doesn't seem that much larger on my arm. Plus the addition of the cross body strap adds SO MUCH UTILITY for me it wasn't even a question of which to get after see that haha
There is a protective case built in the mini for a tablet (I think 11 inches?) but I really don't mind just tossing my computer in the main area.

Hey ladies - I am going to USC admitted students day this Friday - what the heck should I wear? I am thinking a business dress that isn't a suit but still looks professional? What do you guys think about shoes? I assume I will be walking/touring...but I also kind of wanted to wear low heels. Ugh...

I'm going to visit UCLA for an admit event on Monday and I was gonna wear Lilly (it isn't a business dress per se but I wore it into my summer internship in a congressional district office so it's not like scandalous or anything) with ballet flats. I want to take advantage of the warm weather
