I'll try my hand at negotiating, I suppose. Is there a definitive etiquette as to how long I should wait between scholly offer email and my "That was funny, but..." email?

Also got that 36k over 3 years joke. I was seriously considering WUSTL even with better options (rank wise), but now....

I'd say the only relevant thing to wait for is competing offers. If you have something to work with, I'd say start now.KanyeShrug wrote:Also got that 36k over 3 years joke. I was seriously considering WUSTL even with better options (rank wise), but now....![]()

$60k total via email. honestly a bit more than i expected with my numbers. i would imagine that many of you with higher numbers would do well to negotiate if you're really interested.

lol i'd hate to be the asshole here, but everyone needs to calm down about these low offers. It happens every year. As a practical matter the school can't make baller offers to every candidate in the first round. It's about trimming the fat gradually and re-allocating funds.
There are two options here:
1. Withdraw from WUSTL because you're upset about the low initial offer or you're too lazy/proud to negotiate. (You are the fat that needs to be trimmed)
2. Stick it out, negotiate, and wait.
I would highly recommend #2. This is your financial and professional future at stake, makes total sense to be patient for 2-3 more months lol.
But if you opt for #1, then good luck (sincerely). FWIW I would not recommend going to Minnesota no matter how much more they give you than WUSTL.
One of my roommates started with a 54k initial offer. He was patient, and now he doesn't know what the fuck tuition is.
This is a game, you gotta play to win

If you guys didn't catch it earlier, I didn't get my final offer until the middle of June, and as Cuse put it so eloquently, now I don't know what the fuck tuition is.

I think some of us have even more competitive offers from peer schools and higher ranked schools. Since WUSTL was so generous last cycle many of us were expecting a decent offer. So lots of us are disappointed.cusenation wrote:lol i'd hate to be the asshole here, but everyone needs to calm down about these low offers. It happens every year. What was distinguishing WUSTL from other schools is not longer there.

Re: WUSTL c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 Cycle)
I'd say regardless of where you start, you should try and max out all of your offers before you make a decision. Keep asking for more until they say no, and then ask again. This goes for every school you're considering. They can't take an offer back, and they can't unadmit you. There's literally no downside here. When no one will budge, make your decision based on what the end result is. That's really all you can do.jk148706 wrote: I think some of us have even more competitive offers from peer schools and higher ranked schools. I'm just saying there's a lot of disappointment ITT bc the scholarships released today are nothing special nor do they make WUSTL any more appealing. It doesn't seem that was true last cycle.

To preface this, it doesn't really matter to me which TLS-ers attend WUSTL or not, so believe me when i say i'm being objective.
I was in a similar situation, fielding offers from comparable schools and T10's. But it's about maximizing the entire pie.
Lets say Penn offers you 50k and WUSTL offered you 30K. It would be short-sighted to just accept the Penn offer. You want to play all the schools against each other and maximize all your offers. I say this with some hesitation because i wouldn't people to siphon money away from applicants who actually want to attend WUSTL, but it's in your interest as an applicant to play the schools against each other.
And this is partly why it's so important to be patient and hang on until the last moment (for all of your schools). This kind of negotiating happens at all schools, so there's a ton of scholarship money that's freed up at the 11th hour as all those applicants finally stop negotiating and pick their school.
And also, there's nothing to be gained by writing off WUSTL (or any comparable school) this early. Are you going to submit your deposit in January? Nothing changes. You'll just be sitting around for the Spring. The only party that benefits from applicants depositing early or withdrawing early are the schools and the other applicants.
I completely understand the disappointment. There were kids last cycle who had 170+ and only got 10k/year. And it's all exacerbated because people have such high scholarship expectations of WUSTL, which is a fair expectation to have. But I'm urging everyone to just push through the disappointment, because again, this is your financial and professional future at stake. Take a day or a week to mourn and sulk about it, but don't get off dat grind.
ETA: If WUSTL is not the right school for you, I (we) will be honest and tell you. But you need completely maximize your offers for us to even have that discussion.

Replies about negotiation are definitely credited, though using last year as a standard is not the best logic. The full rides being thrown around last cycle most likely won't be happening again, and most of the offers give out today will need to be doubled or maybe tripled to be considered against offers from similar or better schools.
I've seen enough from WUSTL to be sticking around until the bitter end, but it's hard to imagine their initial offer being increased by 2 or 3, which essentially would be an admission of giving a lowball offer in the first place.

Granted, last year was an anomaly, but my initial offer was increased by 2.4 times. Take that for what it's worth.cannibal ox wrote:Replies about negotiation are definitely credited, though using last year as a standard is not the best logic. ETA: They may have also had a shitton of applications this year after last year's money drop, so they may have had to spread funds thinner initially. That's just conjecture, but it's possible.

Re: WUSTL c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 Cycle)
Two negotiation questions:
1. If you're a non-T14 applicant, what schools are best to negotiate with WUSTL? It's the second highest ranked school to which I've been accepted, so I don't have some T14 offers to leverage a bunch of money. Instead I'll have stuff like UGA, W&M, Wake Forest, etc (with $$). Would they just laugh at lower ranked offers and stick to their initial offer of $51K?
2. With regard to seat deposit deadlines, are schools willing to push them back? My first deadlines start April 1/April 15, which doesn't leave a ton of time to negotiate.
