Is this true? Didn't mean to call you out before, I've just heard from a variety of sources, including the school itself, that in state residency is very easy to establish for *all* UGA law students. Can anyone corroborate the above account?tchan4269 wrote:The major factor behind it is whether or not your parents claim you as a dependent on their tax returns. If you're claimed and they don't have Georgia residency, you aren't eligible for in-state tuition. Obviously, everyone's situation is different, but for those under 24, and straight out of undergrad, their parents likely claim them.

I think , could be wrong, but during your 1L even if you are under 24 your student loans count as income of some sort to be able to qualify you as independent for 2L in state. I thought I heard that somewhere.

I'm pretty sure if you take out a loan to pay for law school under your name...like most people will do...you're fine after the first year. That's what a 1L said earlier and that's what the people at admissions said when I called. Online forums are huge sources of misinformation.tchan4269 wrote:The major factor behind it is whether or not your parents claim you as a dependent on their tax returns. Re: Georgia 2011 Applicants
The loans need to be in your name, yes. VERY importantly, have the loans direct deposit into a GEORGIA bank account. More than half of your "income" needs to come from Georgia. So if you have the funds go into a bank account in florida, then leave the cash there, it won't count. It'd probably be OK if you transferred the cash to a GA account, but I would try to get a GA bank account as soon as I had an address to put down so that you won't even have to worry about that.bartleby wrote:I'm pretty sure if you take out a loan to pay for law school under your name...like most people will do...you're fine after the first year. If your parents count you as a dependent, you WILL NOT get instate unless your parents are Georgia residents.
Get a GA drivers license. If your car is in your parents name in another state, that is OK.
If applicable, pay taxes in GA.
Make sure your name is on a lease in GA. You'd be surprised, but some silly people do not have actual leases.
If you have a roommate, if possible try to get one of the bills in your name.
It's really easy, you just have to do the steps. Virtually everyone gets instate 2L and 3L year.

Does anybody know of any good places to live downtown near the law school?

TONS of law students live at 909 Broad. This year they were really cool about lumping all of the law students apartments together for noise/social purposes.plug1 wrote:Does anybody know of any good places to live downtown near the law school?
There are also law students in University Towers, the Georgian ($$), and Farmers Lofts (avoid if you don't like cockroaches and insane electric bills).
PM me and I can give more details. I don't want to outrageously out myself more than I already have.

I wouldn't recommend Farmers Exchange. I almost lived there this year, but when my roommates and I toured it, we did not like it at all. It is hard to beat the location, but the price is outrageous for the size and quality.eandy wrote:TONS of law students live at 909 Broad. 909 is definitely the best place for the money if you want to live that close to downtown and campus. River Mill is also very close to campus, but there is a lot of partying that goes on there.
I prefer the east side myself, but that is because you can get bigger and nicer condos and townhomes for the same price as smaller, lower quality lofts closer to campus.

Nearly flawless GPA but I'm below the 165 mark, which--if postulation in this thread is correct--appears to be where UGA is trying to raise that median, so... f---
i'd love to attend UGA. Been UR since early/mid Dec. This position is so frustrating. You have some good acceptances, some good scholly offers, but you're borderline at the schools you WANT to attend, and they just string you out until the very end.
UGA/WUSTL/ND, if you're going to WL/reject me, please just do it now instead of waiting another 2 weeks...

I feel your pain!! Same here!! I feel like there's no way I could be a rejection, and even a WL would be a huge surprise to me after seeing their LSN from last year.PrayingforHYS wrote:Nearly flawless GPA but I'm below the 165 mark, which--if postulation in this thread is correct--appears to be where UGA is trying to raise that median, so... f---

Yeah just some anecdotal information on that topic. Friend of mine with a 165 applied March 1 and was accepted yesterday.

Re: Georgia 2011 Applicants
seems like the proof that I need that 165 is the wall. Meanwhile, I've been sitting here since December, nearly perfect GPA, and an LSAT score 1 point worse. Unbelievable.jthomas wrote:Yeah just some anecdotal information on that topic. Friend of mine with a 165 applied March 1 and was accepted yesterday.
If your friend's GPA was 3.9x or 4.0, then fine, but ... that's just ridiculous (if true)

I never applied simply because my low LSAT (163) is nothing but rejection on LSN regardless of GPA.

Not necessarily. I *love* Tallahassee; I have all the right connections here, but I would really like to experiment with somewhere new.Sandro wrote:leidice I thought you wanted to stay in Tally ???

just kidding. Staying at 28 would be cool. It'll probably drop a little but who knows, doesnt matter much anyways. A jump would be solid though.

They jumped seven slots before, so if the upward trend continues; hitting 25th isn't too farfetched.

So, I was accepted a few weeks back, with no mention of any scholarship. That being the case, I wont be attending. I'm contemplating send an email regarding it, anyone have any experience negotiating with them?
