I don't think of it as a cop out. I was just using the "gender is a social construct" to remind EVERYBODY that we're all humans.
I am saying that we should avoid fighting with each other instead of working with each other.

Excatly! And unfortunately there are a lot of folks out there who still look at feminism that way. Which is why I want to do all that I can to bridge a gap towards them understanding that this movement is PRO-HUMANITYHildegard15 wrote:
Feminists are not anti-men. That was just mudslinging the opponents of feminism used to try and discredit our movement. Painting us all as man-haters so that women wouldn't want to join in. I absolutely HATE when people say that they aren't feminist because they don't hate men. It makes me RAGE SO HARD. Believe me though, I've been there. In high school I was stupid and said the same thing about not hating men. But that is an idiotic reason to be against an equal rights movement and I personally am embarrassed by high school me saying that. But we live and we learn.
From what I've seen and studied in the few gender studies classes I have taken, is that these practices negatively affect men. Yes it's not as detrimental, but men would benefit much much more than they would lose in eliminating these practices and views.Hildegard15 wrote: The Patriarchy is built around elevating men over women.. I absolutely believe that society is a better place when everyone is on an equal playing field, but it's tough to deny that equality wouldn't get rid of a lot of the extra advantages men had over us in the past. Men wouldn't benefit from the glass ceiling anymore, discriminatory hiring practices, societal views regarding child-rearing, etc.

I get that the image implies both genders need to be open to communicating, but there is the implication that us ladies are not being open to men's opinions. Exactly WHAT valuable opinion on this matter am I missing from men? The men whose opinions I actually care about won't give a fuck if I am catering to their egos. Not everything needs to be about protecting men's self-esteem.ruizdaw wrote:[/img]

I get it. The Gentleman's thread is meant to tongue in cheek. People in it are talking about whiskey and beer, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that.pleadthafif wrote:Not trying to stoke the fires but I'm confused why the guys having their own thread makes a couple of you angry? Now the guys and gals both have respective threads which seems equal.
The problem is that on another level, it's trivializing the fact that there are certain groups that do face discrimination in the legal profession (and elsewhere- but we'll just focus on the legal profession). These groups - women, people of color, LGBTQ people - face/prepare to face certain issues in applying for law school and entering the legal profession that other groups simply don't. And it's perfectly understandable that these underrepresented groups want to have a place to talk about them.
When a group that really isn't facing any sort of discrimination starts a thread mocking a legitimate one - even if it's done lightheartedly, which I'm sure the Gentleman's thread is is - things starts to get dicey. As I said, it's not like the people in it are saying anything bad, and there are no ill intentions. But let's say there were a non-URM thread/forum created to poke fun at the URM forum. I'd like to think that no one ITT would be posting in it even if the content were all puppies and Parks and Rec and tasty liquor. It would simply be in poor taste. It's really no different with the male/female threads.

I believe it's called the Male Men movement.Muiraquita wrote:It looks like I left for my bocce game and it just went further into the Duke Fiasco territory...
I apologize to all who were offended by the gentlemen's thread, you know it wasn't meant to be some BS meninest(sp?) thing (at least I don't think it was)![]()
also welcome to the new people, I hope this thread's cluster fuck of a day didn't scare you off.
and lastly and completely unrelated: my bocce team got absolutely slaughtered tonight, but I got home to my dog having managed to nudge open an unlocked window on the second floor, so she had her head stuck out to say hello when I biked up.

And awwwwh. Nothing better than having something warm and furry to greet you when you get home. :3
