Re: Wake Forest 2010
The difference between Mason and Wake is negligble anyways. It's not as if an employer is going to look at your resume and a GM graduate and throw yours out. Plus, GM is more for DC and Virginia, and Wake is more NC/SE. Wake, if anything, has more name recognition and (because it has traditionally been ranked higher) probably still has more cache for the slightly older people who would actually hire you.
This is all conjecture, but there IS a big difference in setting. Wake's is, IMHO, a much better setting than GM Law(which is basically in the middle of a giant parking lot in a semi-Urban area).
Also, my Wake file moved to review, which is why I originally came. Hopefully I'll know my decision by the end of the week!

Any idea when scholly info might become available to those of us admitted last week? Hopefully it's not too long.

looking at when the last batch of acceptances came out, I seems like those admitted received their scholarship info roughly two weeks later.
Im still confounded (in a good way) how quickly I was accepted at WF. I applied and was admitted in a two week span. My numbers are ok, but I was honestly hoping for a waitlist. Im now praying some some $ so that I dont have to weigh the opportunity costs of going for sticker.
I also find it interesting that WF has yet to dole out waitlist/rejections.....

I hope this analysis is right (166/3.75), though I hope to go and visit and try to finagle even more, since it seems (from TLS posts) that visiting the campus is key to 3/4-full scholarships.ntzsch wrote:moandersen wrote:mudbug25 wrote:Any idea when scholly info might become available to those of us admitted last week? you should get 18K. 164 seems to be the non-URM scholly cut-off.
my observations are:
164+/3.0+ : 18K
164/3.7ish+ : 25K
165+/3.7+ : 28K

i think visiting will help (couldn't hurt) , but i dont think it is essential at all.

approx 75K youre not paying thoughntzsch wrote:you will get some cake. (ie, have to give less cake to Wake). Funny how a 25K scholly seems so huge, but you still have to pay 33K for the degree. really not all that bad, tho.

No, 33K a year. Tuition is only about 35k, BUT they estimate living expenses at 20k. Assuming a yearly hike, 37k plus 21k would be 58k. 58-25=33. I.e. still out 100k at the end of three years. Living frugally, you might swing it at 60k. Living frugally plus Research Assistant or part-time job, maybe only out 30k.sdegarmo wrote:approx 75K youre not paying thoughntzsch wrote:you will get some cake. Does someone from Wake Forest call you if you are accepted or is it via mail/e-mail?

I'm extremely wary of the COL being 20k, even though it is Wake themselves making the estimate. It could be that they factor in Dorm prices and assume students to be on a university meal plan, which is typically more costly than bargain hunting yourself.kwhitegocubs wrote:No, 33K a year. Also, being that I'm from CA where the COL in LA is ~20k, i find it extremely hard to believe that W-S is anywhere near that.
I also found this, but can't speak to its accuaracy. http://swz.salary.com/costoflivingwizar ... &x=37&y=15
EDIT: in the above link, i use $20,000/yr as base salary
I know it sounds rediculous to go against what Wake says about their own COL, but there is no way its as expensive to live in W-S as it is to live in Los Angeles

Re: Wake Forest 2010
+1 - the 20k number that Wake gives is ridiculous - it costs NO WHERE near as much to live in Winston Salem as it does to live in LA or Miami (USC, UCLA, and UM all give about 20k for COL).ntzsch wrote: HAHA, i just re-did my math. it looks like i'll be living large next year! i was basing the 20K figure not only on what Wake says, but on what it cost for me to live in NC now. I failed to realize that that # included my UG tuition.
15K seems reasonable.

That's why I estimated a lower cost for frugal living. I mean, they estimate about $930/month for room/board/utils, and I'd have to guess you could do a lot better.sdegarmo wrote:

It looks like an absolute abundance of $350-$500 apartments. Some are 2BD, meaning you could pay $225 between roommates. So with $150/month for food (that's do-able) and maybe $150 for utilities (some include most utils/cable), you could get by for $500-$800 I'd bet, meaning Wake is overestimating by maybe 33%. If this holds true across their estimate, then COL is more like 13-14k.
SO, that'd be about 70-80k debt on that model.

even still, that link lists it ~11,500 and Portland, OR (Wake and L&C kind of tied for me right now) at ~15,100. I take most COL averages to refer to the less bargain savvy anyway.

Also - UNC gives $16,626 for COL. I think I'll be calculating COL at 16k to be safe at Wake.

Well, if they have an Aldi's in WS, I think I could get by for $75/month on food. I'd never heard of Cheerwine, but it looks like I'd have to try it just to understand.

For those who attended the Open House last Friday (1/29), did you receive an e-mail with information (ie. agenda) beforehand? If so, when did you receive it?

W-S seems awesome. It looks like I can rent a house with a yard for around $1000 - $1200, which is much better than some of my other choices.

about an hour north of Los Angeles. If i wanted to live IN the city of LA, i would be paying upwards of 800 to share a room that is much smaller than mine, possibly with no living room. My place is a relative bargain compared to the area.kwhitegocubs wrote:Where do you live? Jewel City, Secret Rich Person Land?sdegarmo wrote:kwhitegocubs wrote:

My wife and I pretty much want to go to either Wake or UNC solely for the fact that North Carolina has Cheerwine & Sun Drop. Oh, and freakin' Bojangles. Florida sucks. There isn't even a Jack in the Box here. WTF? Oh, and yeah, no Aldi's either.
