Re: SMU 2012
I emailed them today and they said only a handful of those who were wait listed for FT were taken off the wait list and they did not think that anyone was taken off the PT wait list. And also the Admissions Committee is on vacations so we would not see any movement until next week if any.

Re: SMU 2012
I was also told that SMU had expected to take some people off the waitlist this week as well. Although, I thought I had been told that it would happen by Wednesday (pretty sure this is what I was told by the admissions office, but not 100% positive). Getting kinda down wondering if they have already accepted a batch this week and was not one of them. Has anyone heard of any movement on the waitlist this week yet?

Re: SMU 2012
Only 3 WL/Accepteds listed on LSN and they were back in May. Only one recent update of any sort on LSN and it looks like somebody who just hadn't logged in to update since March.

Have any of you guys heard about Texas A&M buying Texas Wesleyan Law? I was accepted to TWL but declined with hopes of getting of the waitlist at SMU. With TWL becoming Texas A&M next year, althought it's credentials aren't built up, a Texas A&M Degree is a lot better than a TW degree, no?

Re: SMU 2012
The degree's value probably won't make much difference for you. It'll take time for the school to move up in the rankings, and the rankings are what matter. I expect TAMWL (or however its gonna be abbreviated) to become a T2 school within the next 10 or so years.ShouPaLooP wrote:Have any of you guys heard about Texas A&M buying Texas Wesleyan Law? Of course, who knows? This is just my speculation.

It's not going to make a difference fast enough to benefit this year's incoming class.

Since it's going to be under the flagship University campus rather than under the system, you should be able to get a student athletic pass in a year or two when the takeover goes through. And all of the alums will soon become "former students." Other changes will be slower in coming.

Could be good thing to be one of the first classes. I expect many aggies will extend helping hands

Perhaps. A&M has a strong alumni network, but that's still a hell of a gamble to take with your future. Wouldn't recommend anyone do it if they have better options like SMU on the table.bringyourlunch wrote:Could be good thing to be one of the first classes. Depends on how debt averse someone is.

You guys are vastly overvaluing the A&M name and vastly underestimating the entrenched nature of legal hiring.

I would argue that you are grossly underestimating the entrenched nature of being an Aggie.

Coming from an A&M grad, do you honestly think that top firms are going to suddenly look at Texas Wesleyan just because they changed their name?

I don't think TW is suddenly jumping into the top 50, but I do think the aggie network is extremely strong throughout the state.....There is life beyond big law.

Just curious, are they planning on doing some name changing?bringyourlunch wrote:I don't think TW is suddenly jumping into the top 50, but I do think the aggie network is extremely strong throughout the state.....There is life beyond big law.
And I'm headed to Dallas on saturday to poke around for a bit and look at some last-minute housing options

Yes. Texas A&M University School of Law at Texas Wesleyan University. (TAMUSLTWU?) I expect the last part to be dropped some time in the future.miy wrote:Just curious, are they planning on doing some name changing?bringyourlunch wrote:I don't think TW is suddenly jumping into the top 50, but I do think the aggie network is extremely strong throughout the state.....There is life beyond big law.

Re: SMU 2012
Will do. I'll be looking at a couple places within biking distance of campus. Also planning on checking out some places for the S/O that she's been looking at online.
If you've got any places in mind, I don't mind stopping by to take a look for you.

Re: SMU 2012
Anyone else on this thread attempting to transfer into SMU in 2012? I am, and I couldn't find a separate forum/thread for SMU transfers. I applied to Dedman last year and was wait-listed. I just finished 1L at Texas Wesleyan.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Unless you were near the top of the class (single digit percentile) don't even waste your time thinking about it.profbarium wrote:Anyone else on this thread attempting to transfer into SMU in 2012? Re: SMU 2012
Why do you say that? From what I understand, law schools aren't required to report stats for their transfers. Thus, they'd be more likely to let in "marginal" candidates. Or is that inconsistent from what you've heard?busted wrote:Unless you were near the top of the class (single digit percentile) don't even waste your time thinking about it.profbarium wrote:Anyone else on this thread attempting to transfer into SMU in 2012? . . . For me personally, I was "good enough" to get wait-listed at SMU as a 1L (and wasn't taken off the list until the very last minute). My prior record remains intact, but now I've finished in the top third of my law school class. Seems like someone like me (who's shown a desire to work hard and a willingness to borrow money) would make a good Dedman grad.
Now I realize I'm biased, and I don't pretend otherwise. But I do doubt SMU is somehow so "caught up in itself" that anyone who didn't blow the doors off his T3/T4 1L year is simply "unworthy" to pay his tuition and come to class every day.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
