A lot (for most of us, all) of your socialization your 1L year is with your classmates. If you live in the loop or the CWE, you can almost always carpool to and from social events, which always involve drinking. Living where you are, you'd have to drive or taxi to and from everything on your own - it would really hamper getting your drink on with classmates. If that's not important to you, and you want to socialize with your current friends instead of your classmates, staying where you are is fine. Also, I'd call your rent average for the area, not cheap.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone, I appreciate it. I think I'm going to start looking for something closer to campus. I just have to figure out how many people I can bribe to help me move with a case and pizzas...

Trying to decide between WUSTL and American..... Would like to practice law either in NYC or DC however im wondering if going to a higher ranked school (WUSTL) is more important in the grand scheme of things. If this helps American has given me no money but WUSTL has.
Ive also never been to st. louis or the school so if someone can give me an idea of the the environment id be very grateful.

ETA: Can you provide a ballpark estimate of the expected COA at WUSTL? Are these your only options?

Go to WUSTL. Look up employment statistics.LawSchoolAFROBarbie wrote:Trying to decide between WUSTL and American..... 250k debt at American is just unjustifiable unless you have a trust fund and like throwing cash away

Dear lord - I knew American was bad, but I didn't know how bad. Also, as a percentage of a class, WUSTL places better in NYC than American does, and we place pretty well in DC also (Apparently if you want DC, our DC externship isn't horrible). It looks like DC is actually our second biggest market (but that's still only ~8% of the class).
I'm not sure how much it would have taken in $$ to make me pick American over WUSTL, but I have a feeling that such a dollar amount may, in fact, not have existed. When WUSTL has offered you money, and American hasn't, it's an incredibly easy decision.

AFRObarbie, WUSTL is half the size of American, has better job placement, and sounds like it will be cheaper for you. Also the Cost of Living in St. Louis is several orders cheaper than D.C. Unless you have a Fordham/GW option or something that you didn't mention, WUSTL would def be the wiser choice if American at sticker is the only other alternative.dstars823 wrote:LawSchoolAFROBarbie wrote:Trying to decide between WUSTL and American..... Seriously, go to law school transparency and look at the employment statistics. I can't stress this enough.

Anecdotal? Yes. Terrifying? Hell yes.Take, for example, the case of the recent law school graduate who was only able to find a job as a paralegal.
...Let’s meet the woman who claims she had to turn down her employer’s polygamous pleas, in a sexual harassment suit that she slapped him with late last week….
The plaintiff in this case is Sabrina Rafi, a recent graduate of American University’s Washington College of Law. Rafi claims that she worked up to 55 hours per week for only $800 a month. Hot damn, that’s $3.63 an hour.

UGH finally ppl who have some actual knowledge of the law school game! im tired of bouncing ideas off my boyfriend who although is very sweet has no clue!
im waitlisted at gw and Fordham but im not so naive to think i have a shot at getting off the waitlist anytime soon. Im currently living in south africa so im not really going to get the chance to visit WUSTL really until the first day of class:(..... i just dont want to make a huge mistake. I made deposits at both schools for good measure so im safe there but still...... Can anyone tell me what ST.LOUIS is like? will i be bored out of my mind? Is it more of a city atmosphere or small town vibe?

St Louis is pretty fun... its a solid mid sized city, plenty to do as long as you dont venture into east st louis too much i think itll probably be pretty close to Joburg minus the murdersLawSchoolAFROBarbie wrote:UGH finally ppl who have some actual knowledge of the law school game! im tired of bouncing ideas off my boyfriend who although is very sweet has no clue!

On a scale of 1 to wustl, I'd say American should be -10. Cost, job prospects, awesomeness all factored in

It def isn't a small town, but it might feel that way to people coming in from major metros. It's not as big as some coastal cities like Boston, LA, San Fran, but in the context of the midwest, it's pretty big i'd say. There's a lot of bars, restaurants, shopping. Has your selection of pro sports (Hockey, Baseball, Football). Lots of historical sites. I think it has the biggest urban park in the country (Forest Park is right near campus)dstars823 wrote:St Louis is pretty fun... its a solid mid sized city, plenty to do as long as you dont venture into east st louis too much i think itll probably be pretty close to Joburg minus the murdersLawSchoolAFROBarbie wrote:UGH finally ppl who have some actual knowledge of the law school game! im tired of bouncing ideas off my boyfriend who although is very sweet has no clue!

There are buses and a light rail line that runs East-West. WashU gives free passes to students so all that will be free to ride. I've only visited once but I think as long as you have a group of friends/classmates you enjoy spending time with there will always be something to do. Rent and cost of living is EXTREMELY cheap.

If the alternative is American at sticker, St. Louis is the mecca of entertainment and culture. Not saying this to be rude, but you'll appreciate not taking that offer in three+ years out.LawSchoolAFROBarbie wrote:UGH finally ppl who have some actual knowledge of the law school game! im tired of bouncing ideas off my boyfriend who although is very sweet has no clue!

Consider the source and take it with a healthy dose of skepticism, afrobarbie. This man is an advocate of the Thomas M. Cooley School of Law.cusenation wrote:American at sticker is never a good idea. How dare you question the worth of such a fine institution. Don't you know that they were ranked #2 behind Harvard according to the most holistic rankings in existence? The library size itself should be an indicator of the school's commitment to the betterment of legal education.Xs20 wrote:Consider the source and take it with a healthy dose of skepticism, afrobarbie. At this point the only thing that comes into play really are your geographic preferences and which school/city you'd rather spend 3 years at.TheThriller wrote:anybody want to give me a rational reason why WUSTL over Emory all COA being equal?
One pro in the Emory column is that Emory Law is more hoodie-friendly

Do you think WUSTL new class size (probably around 50 people less than Emory's) is a strong reason?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
