Yeah, I harbor no hard feelings against Jerseygirl. I remember that when I took my LSAT in October, EVERYONE told me the results would be available on a Friday. Friday came, the scores weren't there, and I chose to head down to Carrboro instead of sit at my computer and wait. When I woke up the next morning (and what a night that was), my LSAT score was in my inbox.

I'm biased as a UNC student, but for what it's worth US News rankings are relatively meaningless and certainly don't matter as much as how well you do in classes. Yeah, we're not Harvard, but who wants to be Harvard? Damn Crimson couldn't even beat Princeton. Laaaame. Seriously though, just as with undergraduate, if you focus too much on the rankings at the expense of how well the school fits you you're missing the point of school.

Yeah. Y'all are all making very valid points. I should have actually thought about things for longer than thirty seconds before complaining on an internet forum where people can figure out who I am. What bugs me is that I'm actually a gigantic advocate for Carolina for undergrad and I could not give a crap what our ranking is, and the same things that draw me to the school for undergrad seem alive and well at the law school... This is so corny, but when I went on the tour and they showed me the little pro-bono chart where people are competing against each other in hours was pretty much when I was like, okay, Carolina is not kidding when it says it is committed to public service. That is the type of intangible that really impresses me.

Still, I think it's my love for the school that hates to see it drop at all. I was hoping it would move up but perhaps what beccabea says is true. They really, really don't fudge the numbers.

Also, I don't have a premium account so I wasn't aware about those evaluations. Good stuff.

I grew up in a very type-a household with type-a parents who wanted (and still want) me to do very well. So I got put on the smart kid track and wound up in a high school (Myers Park in Charlotte, for those from the area) that fit me very well in terms of academic rigor but left me cold and isolated socially and intellectually. Part of this was my politics (I'm a died-in-the-wool liberal while MP was a hotbed of neoconservatism, right as GWB was elected) but part of this was the fact that my classes were filled with kids whose sole goal in life was to get into Duke, or Harvard, or Yale, because they would consider it a failure to go anywhere else. I couldn't deal with it and ended up burning out in my junior year. Didn't get into Carolina for undergrad but wound up at a small North Carolina liberal arts school that, after a rocky first semester, allowed me to be myself and flourish in ways that the stifling environment of a type A, goal-focused meritocratic elitism.

I'll say it again: in the end, what school you get into doesn't matter so much as what you do once you get to that school. One of my classmates in high school did all kinds of extracurriculars, sports, and the like solely to get into Duke. She wound up with a Robertson Scholarship (it gives you full ride to Duke and UNC) and went off to college. I never kept up with her, but found her on facebook (damn, technology is scary) the other week and saw that she was getting her JD at...

I have a really similar background to you. When I went and excitedly told one of my teachers in high school that I'd won a full tuition scholarship to Carolina for UG he rolled his eyes and told me to tell him when I got into a real school. I'm not exaggerating one bit. What makes me angry is that I didn't think what he said was absolutely ridiculous at the time.

That's nuts about your friend. Ironically I was a finalist for the Robertson but didn't end up getting it. Obviously I would have taken it if I had gotten it but in retrospect I don't mind at all. I hate Dook and I changed majors late in the game and had to do summer school to get that done. That just wouldn't've been possible with the Robertson.

What's scary is I know Moreheads who have done well at Carolina who can't get into a single med school. I'm kind of taking this as a teachable moment for myself. Getting a scholarship is an incredible opportunity for debt aversion but not to be overestimated. "Potential means you haven't done anything yet" as the saying goes...

Honestly I'm not surprised she ended up where she is. She was an idiot in HS and she's an idiot now. She simply did well at that stage in life because she (and her parents) knew how to "play the game" to her advantage and grease wheels. It infuriated me to no end when I was 16, but that's the kind of thing that pisses you off when you're an idiot teenager.

First, politics don't generally matter that much when it comes to making friends in high school. Second, Myers Park is large enough that it wasn't the politics that kept you from making friends; there were plenty of liberals. Nope. You were a geek. That's why you didn't have friends in high school, and that's why you went to UNCSA. Own it!

So, not really much help for those of you who are cuddling with your inbox, but I thought I'd just let you know that I've called. I'm sure Dean States would be helpful if you called him, but I was afraid to do it myself in case he asked me something like when I needed to know by. "Oh, I'm not calling for myself. I just.. uh.. was curious.."

I really hope they can tell us by tomorrow night. I have a refundable plane ticket and a hotel room booked for an admitted students day that I don't need to attend if I get into UNC. The money I'll save is my seat deposit at UNC plus some left over for a T-shirt and a foam finger. Because according to this board, I won't fit in at UNC if I don't have a UNC foam finger.

If the referees (cough, Karl Hess and Co., cough) would have removed Coach K's hand from their arses they might have made the proper call, a sick dunk plus an and one. At that point the Heels were down 7, add the dunk and the free throw and it's a 4 point game and a serious momentum swing on the Heels behalf. I'm not saying Carolina would have won the game, but you never know...

Carolina got outplayed for 40 straight minutes. That would not have changed a thing. I also like how a picture is posted of Dexter Strickland calling him a "god" when he is the team's starting 2 guard and he had exactly 0 field goals in the last two games of the ACC tournament.
