Re: Michigan c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
Submitted 11/4... Still no notification of receipt. LSAC shows my app was requested on 11/5 and transmitted on 11/7, though.
My guess is they are pushing to get all the ED apps out of the way first so they can get those decisions made before the deadline, then get back to the rest of us. I assume that when they get an app in, if it is not flagged as ED, it gets sent to the back to be processed at a later date.

So I know everyone talks about writing a Why Michigan, but I wanted to get my application out as quickly as possible so I didn't. Michigan is definitely one of my top choices, so I am wondering if I should send one now. How much will it delay my application? Is 1-page pretty standard?

I mean, I want my status checker, but I'd totally be cool with just finding a bright U of M packet in my mail tomorrow. I wouldn't be mad at all.

Dean Z personally reads every single application. If you have a well written "Why Michigan" essay, I don't see how it could hurt. Which Dean wouldn't want to read why you would like to attend their university?ShulmanSR wrote:So I know everyone talks about writing a Why Michigan, but I wanted to get my application out as quickly as possible so I didn't. I definitely agree! However I was under the impression that no status checker means they haven't even gotten to my application yet. Is it possible I get the status checker and it's already under review? Because that would make me feel a looot betterthelong wrote:I mean, I want my status checker, but I'd totally be cool with just finding a bright U of M packet in my mail tomorrow. As for the other convo - it takes Michigan a long time to get status checkers out. Most of those getting decisions applied very early, in the first few days of the process. We waited almost 4 weeks before getting access to a status checker. Then another 3 for a decision. Hang tight. It will come. And no, I don't think they are reviewing your app before getting a status checker, but it seems like when it starts getting reviewed, you get the status checker because all of our's said "complete" already when we got out status checkers, and the explanation for that below says "complete" means your application is being reviewed.
ETA - From Michigan's status checker:
"Complete:
Your application is currently being reviewed..."

I went complete on October 14th, which I think is pretty early for Michigan?

My fear is to check the status checker and have it indicate that a decision has been made, but I am still unable to log into ASW.LaCumparsita wrote:Thanks guys! Ronny D, I'm sure you'll get a positive answer soonI went complete on October 14th, which I think is pretty early for Michigan?
I submitted 9/19 and went complete 10/12. 3.5ish GPA/ 173 LSAT. I wonder how they're going thru the apps. Maybe the person assigned to me (perhaps it's by applicant's last name -- I know for UVA it is) just has a lot of apps to ready?

I'm pretty sure Dean Z makes all decisions for admission, or at least has final approval.RonnyDworkin wrote:My fear is to check the status checker and have it indicate that a decision has been made, but I am still unable to log into ASW.LaCumparsita wrote:Thanks guys! True. Sorry should have been more clear. I think that the person reading my file may be backed up and hasn't even gotten to it or given it to Dean Z yet. But this ranting is mere speculation.

My understanding is that Michigan has 2 or 3 times as many admissions staff so that they can spend more time with each application. When I visited last year, the admissions officer already knew me pretty thoroughly from my application.blowhard wrote:I'm pretty sure Dean Z makes all decisions for admission, or at least has final approval.RonnyDworkin wrote:My fear is to check the status checker and have it indicate that a decision has been made, but I am still unable to log into ASW.LaCumparsita wrote:Thanks guys! Re: Michigan c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
There aren't that many of them...especially considering the thousands of apps the process. And at the ASW, Dean Z seemed to know every single student's background as well as every person. I'm not saying they don't read a set pile and advocate for or recommend against...just that one single person isn't likely holding up the progress.thelaststraw05 wrote:My understanding is that Michigan has 2 or 3 times as many admissions staff so that they can spend more time with each application. Re: Michigan c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
Everyday 4 or 5 people get in on TLS. Its pretty obvious they are just going through a huge number of applications. There really isn't anything to read into whether you get in 11/4 or 11/5. People are going to keep getting in for weeks and Michigan loves them all equally, I am sure. Who knows how apps get mixed up and put in piles, and re-ordered, and what not. I really think all of the adcoms would laugh heartily at attempts to analyze these things, which have no significance. I keep saying it, but it really is wayyyyy too early to start worrying about what not hearing could mean.
Case in point. Last Friday, everyone was freaking out because some gained access to the ASW, Yale was rolling out completion emails, and Harvard was setting up KB1s. I got none of the 3. Other people were worried and sad for me, even though I wasn't! I could have spent my weekend in despair that I was unloved, but as I recommended to everyone, I enjoyed the weekend. This week, I got into Michigan, got my KB1 invite, and found out hotmail was screwing up my Yale emails. Crisis averted. This is a long roller coaster ride and worrying about these minor differences is a huge waste of your time that you will regret when you find out it was all for nada next week or the week after. I know its difficult, but feel confident. I'm confident in you! You have solid numbers, you worked hard on your app, you have done everything you need to do - if a school can't see that, another one will and there is nothing you can do now to determine which school(s) sees the light. So enjoy your fall. Try the latest Starbucks, high calorie, delicious seasonal drink - all will be well. Then you are going to be face-palming you ever worried about it in the first place, and like the Michigan students in this thread, you will be merrily laughing from beautiful AA next year at all the silly OLs and their speculation. If this week or month sucks, the next will be better.
