I started negotiations today. And although I doubt UCLA will up my offer from 40k up to an amount that would make me consider enrolling, I really appreciate the Dean's promptness and solid communication. I'm also in the 40k from ucla, 157.5k from usc camp. Quite a gap to bridge...

Will UCLA negotiate with a USC offer? I just got 50k from UCLA but I have 120k from USC. Kind of surprised by the large difference.

they might.... but it's also not a huge difference because ucla is 55k less than USC (and most other law schools) over the 3 years, so the total cost of attendance is similar with that offer

It seems like they don't have a lot of money this year. I have not heard of anyone getting more than 80k in this thread.

Berkeley's silence on scholarships (they said Feb. 15 on their website, missed that date, told a TLSer who called that it would be yesterday or today, then missed that as well) is making $100K at UCLA look very attractive

Hey thanks for posting that. I haven't gotten a scholly offer yet from UCLA (hoping soon!!) but it was kinda amazing to see that it was really so much less expensive than these other schools. So it means that 65K from UCLA is like 120k at USC. And the same with most other places too.

Ya, seriously though, I appreciated that chart coming with the email I threw it into excel and calculated projected tuition costs minus scholarships. With the offer UCLA provided me, I'd be paying $4k more than Cornell...and $13k more than USC...

$90k from UCLA. Does anyone mind sharing if their awards are solely merit based, or if they include the need-based grant as well? Mine is merit + need-based. I'm curious to know whether or not the amount I received for one category affected the amount received for the other.

Looks like a lot of lowball offers compared to last year, I'll definitely be interested to see how negotiations shape up for folks...for added thread info I got 85k, out of state, with a 169 3.8+

I'll be negotiating with USC offer and T14's...we'll see how it goes (anyone who lives in New England will understand why I want to live in LA).

I don't fully know, but my instinct says the best bet would be to play USC and UCLA off each other for now and to play the T14 off each other. Then hopefully when all is said and done you will either be attending a superior school at a lower rate or you can bring a sweet T14 offer back to UCLA and force them to exceed it.

I get wanting to have warm sunny January's but just proceed with caution before you go to a regional school and lock yourself into a region where you've never lived.

Haha no worries. I just moved to LA all naive thinking it would be the best thing ever and it's been a very mixed bag. However, I moved for a lot less than law school so apples and oranges. Just thought I'd project regrets.

Actually, looks like UCLA is cheaper for you than USC by 15K -- that's kinda rare, I think b/c usually it seems like it's the other way (which makes sense, since UCLA is consistently a bit higher ranked), so I don't really think that USC offer will really help you negotiate right now. I don't know about the lower offer question from T14s but maybe those will help.
