Re: TLS c/o 2018 Applicants
Bits of all three? So I've known for a few years now that I definitely wanted to work in gov't, and this was sort of my experiment with BigLaw before I made the leap (and, also, where there was a paycheck.)smccgrey wrote:Love it too! My dad grew up in Maryland and all his side of the family are in DC at the moment - have visited so many times, and I never really want to leave. There's just something about DC that I can't get enough of.middlebear wrote:Fingers crossed.smccgrey wrote: Thanks - yeah once I started thinking about it, I realized "okay, this really is an interesting story..." and it really did have a huge impact on me personally, etc etc.
This sit down with the friend (who is an english prof and political consultant) was basically him trying to dig out of me WHY I want to go to law school, and it was effective - I'm not sure I would have articulated it particularly well before that conversation.
And DC would be so awesome! I hope I can make it happen!I'm paralegal-ing here right now (BigLaw, though I want to do gov't post-LS) and, except for it being in a swamp, absolutely love the city.
Has your experience with DC biglaw been terrifying/inspiring/meh? I like to think I'd be thrilled with either DC biglaw or Gov, but as a 0L in an unrelated industry, I realize that I have 0 idea what I'm talking about.
I don't work in like lit or anything (healthcare law, Medicare/Medicaid mostly) and it's mostly not terribly interesting, which to be fair I didn't expect it to be. Sometimes partners working on lobbying/etc. makes you feel a little ethically queasy. The vast majority of the people I work with I really do like--they've been very supportive of law school apps, LSAT, a family sickness, etc. Though, like I think BigLaw everywhere, the partners are insane and super disconnected from reality.
It's been a great base, though. I do a lot of things unrelated to my job that I could only really do in DC--foreign policy blog, language classes, etc.--and occasionally my job really does teach me about how you can be a dynamic lawyer and work to change legislation/gov't/etc. But mainly it has confirmed for me that I really would vastly prefer government work.

Re: TLS c/o 2018 Applicants
Harvard - acceptance rate 16% (med LSAT 173)
UChicago - 21% (171)
Columbia - 19% (172)
NYU - 28% (171)
*UPenn - 16% (170)
*UVA - 16% (170)
*Berkeley - 12% (167)
Michigan - 25% (169)
Northwestern - 24% (170)
My question: Why do Penn/UVA/Cal seem to prize a low acceptance rate--and, in turn, often deploy YP in their admissions process--over other benchmark criteria? From browsing LSN, it seems UVA and Penn hold a particular reputation for WLing high scorers. Given that law school rank is not directly correlated to acceptance rate (e.g. NYU), I am curious about what their admissions strategy is.

What is up with all these Texans?
But I'm loving the DC love ITT! Think I want to go somewhere else for a while but it is an excellent excellent city. It's a particularly amazing place to be a PI lawyer--I know several dozen extremely interesting environmental lawyers all of whom could be your friend. Potentially.

Is anyone planning on doing a Penn thread? I would do it myself but I don't even have close to a 100 posts.
