UCLA will not be matching USC scholarships (I tried). This is a culmination of the following reasons:

-they are no longer butting heads in rankings
-UCLA is substantially cheaper than USC (they will point this out to you)
-they don't have to; people are willing to attend UCLA without a match

They will not much your total USC amount but they will still up you to the point where it will be cheaper for your to go to UCLA. SO say USC offered 120k and UCLA 75k, UCLA will probably bump you to 105k therefore making UCLA cheaper(for in state). That's based upon from what I saw on LSN. UCLA is 10k cheaper of in state about 3-4 for out of state. The only problem is that private schools usually raise their tutions every year in a more predicatable pattern. Public schools don't raise them every year but when they do it is in big chunks.

You are obviously an exception.. I think they feel confident because they beat USC in employment(usually even there) this year and USC fell in rankings. They could have also seen an increase in apps and feel good about the number of matriculants.

Yes, that is why I was sharing my experience. I don't think I was an exception. They have room to breath. Although I am sure they are still playing hardball with top ranked schools.

They asked me to fill out the need access when I tried to negotiate using my USC scholarship. I'm not likely to get any need-based aid, but did anyone get a merit offer only after they had filled out the need access stuff?

That's a suprise because according to LSN almost everyone who got 150,000,135,000,120,000 from USC got the same amount from UCLA(minus about 15,000 or so but remember UCLA is that much cheaper).

Does anyone have any insight re: renewing need-based aid at UCLA? I have an offer that includes this, but I have no idea how to view it. Should I treat this as a one-time grant? Or is it almost always renewed?

I am a UCLA 1L now....last year i think UCLA got blindsided by the scholarship move the USC made. SO they reacted and started matching. I got UCLA up to 95K from 45K because of the USC offer of 120K. I have a friend who got the 105K, but his Lsat was 169, gpa 3.70. mine was 167 and 3.89. we both went to Midwest State Universities (big 10). I am guessing they gave him a little more because of the LSAT. HE had some good offers from Vandy, Cornell, Northwestern and like me 120K from USC.
