I'm a southerner in the same boat. I just went shopping yesterday. I bought fleece leggings and sweater dresses. I plan on bringing my uggs and a couple pairs of fashionable boots. I am also not above wearing nice jeans and a sweater.

Bring your thickest jacket, a sweater, and a scarf to put over your clothes and you should be fine.

Good luck!
I'm a bit of a wimp in the cold but unless you have a knee-length coat or are planning on wearing jeans over them, fleece leggings won't do much at all to keep ya warm. With wind chill it's been in the single digits in DC (no clue next week's forecast though) and when it's that cold, I for one always double up on leggings and real pants, under a long coat.

Also be careful about the Uggs, snowy salty sidewalks ruin shoes very quickly :|

Good luck!!!

Thanks for the advice! I didn't even think about shoes getting ruined.

As a resident of upstate NY and then Boston I'm a bit of a snow/cold expert. Wearing leggings UNDER dress pants or jeans helps keep out the wind. (Learned this because I'm too lazy to take my leggings off before chapter so I just put my dress pants on over them)

Ok I'm obviously not from the north and I simply cannot comprehend how people live in the cold much less dress cute. What do you wear to work?? Do you have a walking/subway outfit and then change into a work outfit?? Where do you put the other clothes? What about shoes? How do you keep your hair from being disgusting 24/7 with all the static and mashed down hats?? I DON'T UNDERSTAND. Also are leather boots ok in the salt? Im thinking of the frye valerie shearling boots but I don't want those getting ruined. How do you keep your eyes open in the snow flurries? What do you wear in the spring when its still like 40 degrees? Floral sweaters? Do you ever wear sandals and sundresses? I realize that people must be able to survive but for the life of me I cannot figure it out.
The salt could mess up leather boots, I try not to wear mine in the snow if I can help it since they already have some water damage. I'd play it safe if you have another option. Hahaha some days I'll bring a work outfit or at least change from tights + leggings to a skirt and tights, but other days I'm like whatever I can suck it up! and just deal with cold legs wearing tights because I'm extremely committed to an outfit....but that might just be me

This made me smile.

You invest in leggings and warm tights (I like fleece-lined ones, but opinion is varied). Make sure you have a heavy-duty jacket; I like knee-length ones with hoods, personally. Usually, people do wear different shoes while commuting and then have work shoes at the office. You can keep the shoes at the office or carry them in your bag/backpack. Hair... I can't help much there, I always have pretty terrible hair. You can try out different hats or use the hood of your coat. I personally would advise against leather boots (though those look really cute!). If you're in a place with serious snow, I really like the Sorel snow boots, and I think they look cute as far as winter wear goes. (Mind you, take all of this with a grain of salt, I am not a fashionable person). If you have a hat with a brim or a big hood, it should protect your eyes. And after an extremely cold winter, 40 degrees feels really warm, so sweaters, slacks, skirts, opaque tights all work. Sandals/sundresses, depends on where you work. Chicago, New York, and DC all get pretty hot in the summer, and I haven't been anyway much farther north than that.

Oh my hair move is to wear a warm headband to cover your ears instead of a hat! And then my coat has a fur-lined hood so I use that on top, it's much nicer to my hair.

I'm throwing in a shout out to fleece lined leggings - wore them constantly to class in Chicago during winters of polar vortex without issue. As far as layers, definitely agree - but some places inside still run cold, so I wouldn't worry too much about 'overheating.'

For the SCOTUS tour, I wouldn't be too concerned if you're still wearing snow boots - you're on a tour (private, yes) but tons of high schoolers tromp through there constantly. As long as you're generally presentable, I don't see an issue in wearing weather appropriate shoes...

Made an account just to reply to this – I’m in California now and my Michigan survival skills are going to waste.

If you’re from a warm state or are headed somewhere below 10 degrees, wear moisture wicking underwear (if possible) and leggings under jeans or dress pants. Merino wool blend or otherwise thick socks under less expensive boots (treated with waterproofing spray) are perfect, or you can wear snow boots and change into flats when you get where you’re going. Layer up (again, a wicking base is always good) under a wool or winter coat.

Get some solid gloves (leather or snow ones), wear a colorful scarf, and either a cute hat or headband that you’re comfortable wearing indoors, or one of those wraparound earmuff things to keep your hair decent. Add a face mask if you’re headed into the negative digits and have no shame.

Keep your hood or hat low and lean forward a bit to allow yourself to see in wind/heavy snow. If it’s icy, walk slowly and like a penguin. If you’re planning on makeup, absolutely wear waterproof mascara and liner, and hold off on lip color until you get indoors – if you wrap your face with a scarf, your breath will get your face pretty damp.

People drive in cold cities, but I don’t recommend trying it yourself if you haven’t had time to practice. Walking to public transport is a painful necessity, but I promise you can handle it :) (Or just get a Lyft).

I wear earmuffs in the winter and they're super warm while still leaving my hair looking good! Ugg has a pair that had an aux cord so you can use them as headphones which I love while walking to class/work!

I tried checking out suits at The Limited today, but I was a little unsatisfied by the fit and lining. I remember them being so much better!

SomeElleWoodsJoke wrote:Thank you all! Cue anxiety that I was counting on several pairs of leather riding boots. With treatment spray will they be less than destroyed if I stick to sidewalks? Primarily going to be ubering for any significant distances. I don't own any snow boots, but they sound bulky lol.

Everything I've tried to buy online to wear is delayed by the storm too >:(
I would definitely recommend getting at least one pair of boots that aren't straight up riding boots just because even with spray, they will still get pretty beat up :(. I LOVE fleece-lined Bean Boots (not that bulky and cute in a rugged way), but Hunters work too (less warm, but you can get special socks for them)!

Do people drive in Chicago and Boston? I don't think the snow would be bad if I had my own car, but walking to public transportation sounds like hell.
If you are in the city, like UChicago or NU, driving will be hell and not worth it. And it takes some getting used to driving in the snow/city. You're much better off getting used to the CTA (or Uber). Also, Chicago is really cold, to the point where 30 degrees=shorts weather. I'm not kidding.

But yes, there are some people who do drive in the city, but parking is really expensive.

Oh fellow legally blonde friend, why do you say these awful things to me?

Are boston people equally crazy? and which city is colder in the "feels like" temperature? Seems like they are roughly equivalent in quoted temp but I've heard the wind/water factor is intense
No, in Boston we do not wear shorts in 30 degree weather. Well actually I saw a kid doing it today, but he got funny looks.
Knowing people at Northwestern, it seems like Chicago is colder (maybe because of windchill) but on average Boston gets more snow so pick your poison.

The MBTA can be a bit hopeless in the snow (see last year when it shut down completely) but driving for people not raised here is sort of insane. The roads are literally paved over cow trails and thus none of them make sense and often intersections branch off like 6 ways instead of the usual 4, roads turn into one way streets, and a lot of roads have the same name making it confusing. Add snow to that and I would probably still recommend MBTA even with its quirks.

How horrible is the walk from your apartment to the bus stop and then the subsequent waiting in the miserable cold?
Also legitimate question that I know sounds insane.... Can people wear some sort of ski goggle and not be expelled from society? I don't understand how you see in the snow and icy wind. Also face masks/thermal neck-chin things?
I know all this seems rather dramatic, but I HATE THE COLD so much and I'm trying to get a feel of how miserable I will be going to law school in the north. It will make a legitimate difference in my daily life/happiness.

Maybe it's just me, but I really don't find it THAT terrible! I've lived in NY the past 4 years and an even colder place before that, and I HATE hate the cold (one of the reasons I'm really desperate for Stanford to love me), but it's really not unbearable. I'm not sure about Boston, but NY and Chicago have been seeing less snow the past few years so if the trend continues, that will def be a plus for you guys! And when it's REALLY bad, public transpo is usually shut down which means universities are shut down, so I don't foresee you having to trudge through too many blizzards. It definitely sucks when it gets super cold, but the majority of the time it isn't too bad! Hope that helps a bit!

The thing is is that it's not usually snowing. Usually it's sunny and cold or gray and cold but there isn't actually precipitation that often. It's just that when it does snow, it can snow a LOT. As mentioned above, if it's really bad schools will close. I usually wear bean boots, a parka, a headband, a scarf over my mouth and nose if I need to, and gloves or mittens and I'm good to go. The train stops on the red line are heated, buses not so much but there are apps that tell you how long it will be till the next one arrives.

Yes, the north gets snow and cold, but we also have lovely things like changing leaves in the fall, and our summers aren't deathly hot. We don't need to worry (usually) about hurricanes or earthquakes or tornadoes, so out of all of those weather phenomena, I'll take snow.

The great thing about Boston from my experience is that in general, everyone prioritizes comfort over fashion (at least when it comes to the winter). While it means I often hear people from NYC complain about how poorly New Englanders dress, no one will give you a second look (on public transportation, on the street) for wearing a face mask or anything else.

Obviously, you won't want to walk around like that at work or in class, but everyone I see pretty much wears Canada Goose and Northface coats along with a variety of boots, scarves.

I actually bike all year round and just bring clothes with me in my bag and change at work. It depends where you are, how much this will actually fly. As long as you don't look disheveled when you're actually meeting with people in a professional setting, I don't think it will matter too much.
