No, that's normal. If you got the email from Kira saying your interview was submitted, they got it.Drmrndaphd wrote:I interviewed last week and my status still says interview requested. Should I call and make sure they received it? I had to use my iPad since I was traveling for the holidays, so it was a little janky.

Hey! Thanks. That's really helpful. Could you talk about housing?LongWinterInIthaca wrote:I'm an undergrad here at Cornell. I've spent 3 years in Ithaca, countless hours at Myron Taylor Hall, and live in a predominantly law student occupied building. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about Ithaca, campus culture, the Law School etc.
Here is some info for anyone considering coming here:
Location (On Campus): The Law School is small. Very small. It occupies some prime real estate as it is positioned directly across from Collegetown, but it is comparatively small compared to the rest of campus. You'll spend most of your time in the quadrant that the Law School occupies, rarely venturing past Olin. I've seen a few law students walking around the Arts Quad, but there is really no reason to do so. This is fairly analogous to your time here. Law students generally socialize together, save a few evening spent at Dunbars with other grad students (R.I.P. It actually closed this month, further limiting your bar options).
Location (General surroundings): I wish I could give you a final statement on the city of Ithaca, closing the debate on the merits of the town for once, but people's opinions on Ithaca vary widely. Personally, I hate it, but many love it. It's a small town that's, largely, politically and culturally homogeneous. The city's policies are generally determined by legislators that don't consider the interests of students because we are largely transient and aren't eligible to vote in local elections. This means that the city's zoning policy's restrict businesses that would be of interest to those in our age demographic. We still don't have a grocery store in Collegetown (it's coming soon, though), which means you have to drive downtown to get food, or take a bus an hour each way to Wegmans/Walmart. There's a few bars in CTown and downtown, a movie theater, "nature," and then a ton of overpriced, organic restaurants. That's it. I lived in a city of millions of people before coming to Cornell, so if you come from a smaller town or lived in one place your entire life, you can just ignore everything I've said because you'll probably like it here. That said, there are many kids from NYC who love Ithaca. It generally depends on what your interest are. If you enjoy a faster pace of life and like to hang around and date people outside of academia, then Ithaca will be rough. If you want to enjoy a "traditional" student experience, with your life and activities generally revolving around school and enjoy nature, hiking, the outdoors etc., then you'll love Ithaca.
I'd be happy to write more about housing, the campus culture, how to get around etc. or answer any questions if you have any interest.

HOUSING:msmizz85 wrote:
Hey! Thanks. That's really helpful. Could you talk about housing?
How To Find Housing: Most housing is found through google searches and Ithaca Craigslist (honestly). In Ithaca, the housing section is a legit way that landlords/subletors advertise their properties. Also, join the Cornell Housing Facebook page for some good listings if you have a Cornell email/Facebook account (you have to be a member of the Cornell network on fbook).
On Campus Grad Housing: Around the same price as Collegetown/Downtown/North housing, but with greater restrictions and fewer perks. A lot of international students choose on campus housing, because they don't initially know how to find better options. People choose it because it's safe and not hard to find. Among students who live on campus, there are those who frequently socialize and those who keep to themselves; I'd say that the on campus population leans more towards the latter.
Collegetown:
Collegetown is for the more social crowd. You don't have to be a frequent bar-attendee or even a drinker to live here, but it is best for those who enjoy the company of others. If you want cheap housing, sign the lease ASAP. Kids camp out in front of leasing offices on the first day of the leasing period. In general, most landlords are parasites trying to suck every last dollar from you, while never intending to invest a dollar in the property past their last renonvation in 1998. Most houses don't have A/C or laundry. Everything on College Ave/Eddy St. is mainly for undergrads and the very social grad student. I'll break Collegetown down by the big buildings:
312 College: Probably the nicest building in Ithaca, save Collegetown Terrace. Very expensive, but there are a lot of perks: gym, movie theatre, great location etc. If you have the money, go for it. But don't break your budget living just to live here. Probably 70% Undergrads, 30% Grads.
BEST CHOICE:College town Terrace: I live here, and it is genuinely the best choice. Some expensive rooms, but there are cheaper options if you ask the leasing office early in the season.Rents from ($480-$2,000). There is an amazing glass gym that is open 24/7 (Cornell gyms close at very early hours), a shuttle bus that runs from the morning to afternoon, study areas, a yoga studio, and a great cleaning staff. The management office is comprised of nice people and are very accommodating. The building and apartments are modern, and less like a dorm. Probably 80% grads, among the grad population it is 50% MBA students, 25% law students, and 25% other grad students, and maybe 20% undergrads. It's definitely the best building for grad students and I cannot recommenced it enough.
Ithacarenting properties: Collegetown Center, Plaza and Dryden. These are very social and have a mix of grad students and undergrads. They are the closest to the law school, but also somewhat loud. About average pricing for Collegetown, and average apartments. Recomend, but check it out before you lease.
Houses: Cheapest, but shittiest. Most houses don't have A/C or a laundry and you have schlep your laundry in the snow/heat to one of the overpriced laundry mats. Most people live with their friends,so it negates some of the bad parts. If you have a friend group that is renting a house, then go for it. But there are better options.
Downtown: For the older grad student/professors. Cheaper, but farther from campus. Helps to have a car if you live here, or you can take the bus. But if you don't have a car, you need to live cloest to the green st bus stop, or it will be hell walking in 2 degree weather. Downtown is for the mature grad student who doesn't have an interest in the CTown scene.
North/West: Primarily undergrads, some good options, but mostly undergrads. Just don't live in Gun Hill (It's far, secluded, and mostly international, engineering grad students who don't interact with others).
When looking at prices, make sure to factor in the cost of utilities (some landlords cover it, some don't) , internet, parking passes (very expensive in Ithaca), and trash (Ithaca makes you buy trash tags that cost me $100 last year).

Has anyone had any difficulty with Kira not admitting that your microphone works? I've tried both my computer's and an external one and onlinemictest says it works but Kira says it isn't. Tech support was no help either... I don't know what to do. It says it works on your smartphone but I don't want to resort to that.

I just used an iPad, the mobile app recorded really fuzzy but I was accepted so i don't think it really matters. I think they care more about the answers than what you record it on.Applesauce11 wrote:Has anyone had any difficulty with Kira not admitting that your microphone works? Submitted mine today. I think it went fine, but I will say that as a format, this kinda sucks. Makes for awkward performances, in a sense, and I found any brief pause in my train of thought threw me way off in a way that it never would in a conversation. Very frustrating, I'm glad pretty much nobody else uses these.

Placed on reserve today - a glorified waitlist. I was really surprised. I have a 3.8/166 and submitted my applications on the last day of November. I was selected to interview and completed that within the 10 days they asked. Based on my numbers and the requested interview I thought I was definitely in. Guess not.
I already got into better schools with my numbers (Duke) and have full rides at other schools waiting but I was really hoping I would get into Cornell. It was on the top of my list as a realistic contender where I could see myself going to law school.

hmm. first of all: i'm sorry to hear that. second: we applied on the very same day, and my stats are similar (tho i've got a few more points lsat-wise) and have heard absolutely nothing. no interview request. no word whatsoever beyond the initial confirmation.PhysicistLawyer wrote:Placed on reserve today - a glorified waitlist. You should absolutely be in at Cornell if you beat me on the LSAT.

This makes me feel a little bit better. I havent heard from Michigan but it was also towards the top of my list so hopefully I hear from them soon. I guess Cornell thinks they'll get better candidates from the December takers.cdavis1024 wrote:Are we twins? I, too, thought my chances at Cornell were solid, but they haven't even asked me to interview, so I feel a ding. I've seen 2 or 3 others on this thread with similar stats who were also rejected, and it makes me wonder what they're up to in that snowy place this year.
I've just been looking at the bright side: the worst scenario we could possibly face at this point is going to Duke at sticker price, and that's a pretty damn good "low point". (This does not mean I'd opt for Duke at sticker necessarily, in just sayin'.)
The reserve definitely hurt my ego though.

I heard tons of complaint about NW online interview saying it's too stressful and awkward. Almost every one thought they didn't act as well as they could. But it seems that the online interview of Cornell isn't so scary since no such complaint....Is that true? Probably doing tomorrow and getting really nervous right now > <

The Northwestern Interview asks a lot of questions that are quite detailed and tough to answer in one minute. I found myself really rushing at the end of the questions to trying and finish my answers. The Cornell questions are simpler and although there are also some situational questions, they aren't as detailed or odd as the ones I got in my Northwestern interview. Additionally the questions in the Cornell practices are similar to the kinds of questions in the real interview whereas the Northwestern practice questions are extremely basic. Answering to the video is definitely a little bit weird in either case, but I, like the majority of users, found the Cornell interview less intensive. So don't be too nervous and you'll be fine!
