When I applied to Michigan I also emailed and told them that I "preferred" summer semester because they do ED for regular term admissions and they may be more likely to roll you over if you're indifferent about which term you start.

It couldn't hurt. The way I was told, some ED people are admitted for Fall. Maybe call and get some kind of clarity and to mention preference.
