Re: American University 2011 Applicants
I am able to attend both ASD so, I am trying to figure out which to attend. It seems most here are attending the April 1st one. Is that the general consensus?

Re: American University 2011 Applicants
For those who seemed have been WL via YP...does this bode well for our chances of getting off the waitlist? I mean, if we seem to have strong stats and seemed likely for admission, doesn't seem (somewhat, at least) plausible that we should be able to fight our way off the WL by showing interest? (i.e. campus visit, LOCI). Or will American just shut out pretty much all of us?

Re: American University 2011 Applicants
WL via email, which was surprising as I got into GW and WLed at GULC.
Whatever. I told them to just take me off the WL because I am not going.

If you get any scholarship does that come with the admit letter or come later? I am sure this has been asked before so if it has and I missed it, apologies.

The only scholarships I've heard of are 10k or the PIPs full-ride...:\deepspacenine wrote:If you get any scholarship does that come with the admit letter or come later? I am sure this has been asked before so if it has and I missed it, apologies.

Just got WLed here. I'm pretty sure I wasn't put on the wait list cause of yield protection though. I only applied to a few T1 schools as my numbers aren't great, but maybe I can still get in.

Yeah I knew they only really gave 10K or PIPS, was just wondering if the 10k comes later or if they put it in letter. Looks like no 10K/AU for me. Thanks for the info!abonda01 wrote:Fine. I think scholarships are offered with the letter.red_alertz wrote:taht's not answering the question...

Re: American University 2011 Applicants
Certainly depressing but that's just TLS...if a school has a bad rep it will grow on a site like this where defending it will only get you chastised. American is a fine university and anyone who gets in and decides to go should be proud. Obviously they will need to do very well to have a shot at BigLaw or the prestigious PI/Govt jobs but I would like you to show me a school outside the t3 where that isn't the case. American in DC has a fine reputation but is caught in a numbers game but an AU degree will not hold you back if you do fine. Take what you read on this site for what it is, take it with a HUGE grain of salt and realize that no matter what school people go to it will be tough. I guess after this whole researching schools process: going to schools, looking at stats, talking to friends and family in law school/working at firms, reading sites like this, etc this is my two cents on the matter.red_alertz wrote:check the thread in law admi section about american, depressing isn't it

Re: American University 2011 Applicants
Completely agree with justhockey. I've met with a ton of lawyers in DC (non-profits, human rights, civil rights, big law, patent, IP, etc.) and all will say that AU has a good reputation. Though if you want to work at, say, Cravath, then you'll have to bust your ass at bit more than if you were coming out of GULC but that's not exactly news...

Re: American University 2011 Applicants
Does American have any reputation for technology law/ IP (or I guess it would be soft-IP in this case?)
Seems like it would be tough for them to compete with GWU which is known to be DC's IP power house. I don't really have an interest in PI/human rights law which seems to be all American offers.

Got the WL email today, kind of disappointed.
3.3, 167. Did I get YP'd or do I just suck?

Where are people staying for the ASD? Closest/Cheapest seem to be the Days Inn and Holiday Inn.

Sorry to hear! You going to send a LOCI? Seems like your numbers are good for their medians, would think it's a YP.law4vus wrote:Got the WL email today, kind of disappointed.

Im staying at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park. Its pretty close to WCL.ZFB wrote:Where are people staying for the ASD? Closest/Cheapest seem to be the Days Inn and Holiday Inn.
In regards to the YP Wl's: If you show WCL your interest they will almost certainly contact you first when they pull people off the waitlist. I want to clarify that this means those people with higher LSAT scores and GPA's. My guess is that anything above a 164 and a 3.5 will immediately get you a phone call offering you admission.

Sorry to hear that. Your numbers are slightly better than mine, so I'm going to go with you don't suck. For me it was the softs and letters of recommendation that were the difference makers. Definitely keep in touch with the Admissions office, it certainly won't hurt.law4vus wrote:Got the WL email today, kind of disappointed.

Re: American University 2011 Applicants
I visited on Friday and asked about their 10k scholarships. They are given to people who are above both the median GPA & LSAT of the class. Kind of annoying because my LSAT is the median but my GPA is higher than even the 75%. So no money for me. It was suggested that more money may be doled out based on offers not being accepted (I imagine a lot won't be for so little money). But those would be made after the April 1 seat deposit date. And it seems like the most need-based grants they give out is ~15k. It blows because I actually liked the school and love DC.

Re: American University 2011 Applicants
This is exactly why I'm not going, even though I love American and their public interest emphasis and this school was originally my first choice. Too much money for their degree, when I have much higher ranked schools to choose from at half the cost.abonda01 wrote:I visited on Friday and asked about their 10k scholarships. Re: American University 2011 Applicants
I sent an email begging for $$.
We'll see what happens... cuz if they say no, I'll withdraw on the spot. I don't wanna compete w Gtown & GW & GMU for jobs in DC while trying to figure out how to pay down 200K in loans...
