Just looked up the cost of cross-country Uhaul rental, plus apartment rental fees, plus the cost of a hotel to stop at on my 22 hour journey...god help me

This. I was originally planning on taking the scenic route during my move, but now I don't know if I'll have the money for it

I just Google Mapped my route, and it will take 34 hours. That's "scenic" enough for me lol

One route has me going through cities like Newark in a Uhaul while the longer option has me going through no big cities. Gotta decide if the extra mileage is worth it to avoid city traffic in a rig.

I'm going with either PODS or UPack for moving. I'd rather do the packing and then pay a little extra and have someone else do the hauling. I just don't feel comfortable driving from one coast to the other in a Uhaul.

Is it illogical for me to be willing to take on relatively more in loans because I'm only 20 and feel like I'll have more time to focus on paying it off before I have a family/home/more responsibilities? I've heard so many conflicting opinions on how much is reasonable to take out and how much it'll affect my quality of life, but I feel like I'd be okay with that as long as I'm able to pay them off by the time I'm like 28-30ish.

If you're going to be 23 when you leave LS, I wouldn't bank on being able to pay off your loans by 28-30. The standard loan length is 10 years and, with no guarantee of what your salary will be when you get out, there's no way to know for sure if you'll have the money to make larger payments (even without a family to pay for). It probably works if you land BL but that would be too much of a risk for me, personally.
Disclaimer: I have no idea how much debt you're talking about but I'm assuming that it's a lot. I also don't know the other justifications for taking out more debt but I assume their worth it for the sake of this post. I'm not saying taking the extra debt is necessarily a bad idea, I would just be weary of plans to pay it off in 5 years

Thanks for the input! You're right that it depends on landing BL, but I'll probably be attending UChi and I feel like that's a pretty reliable bet. I'm more concerned that I won't last long enough to make it happen. The amount would probably be 200k including interest, so I was guessing it's be possible to put in 30-40k/year while in biglaw and then maybe a little less if I move on to something else.I guess I also feel like the debt will be much less burdensome and intimidating once it's down to 80k or less.

I really want to bring my car and just pull a trailer since I'm pretty comfortable doing that, but it would be cheaper in the long run to just rent a truck for the move rather than pay to park my car in Boston. In an ideal world I would use PODS and just fly up, but that won't be financially possible unless my job decides to very quickly and drastically increase my pay this summer.

Part of said scenic route is stopping at my parents house for a few days and then driving to Missouri to visit my grandma since I haven't seen her for 7ish years. My justification is that I'm already taking an indirect route, so I might as well add a few more meandering stops along the way

Two years ago I drove a 16 ft penske from Florida to NOVA and it was super easy once you got going. The start was the only hard part after that you just stay near the interstate.

That said, that trip is very short compared to a coast-coast and I had my girlfriend and myself to drive it.

I am deeply in love with my current car, and it has low miles. But it's totally not affordable during school.

However, now I can start looking for that used Saab i've dreamt of for a while now...

I drive the same Chevy Trailblazer I've had since high school and have never had a real issue with it. Driven it to and from Florida, Chicago, New Orleans, and Virginia in the past year and I absolutely love it, but the miles are racking up. I know I'll have to get some actual work done on it as it creeps closer to 200k miles, but the blue book value on it is pretty low so it may be justifiable to just go in for another used car instead.

True, you'll need one too! I'll have to rely on my portable Bluetooth speaker for said playlists and podcasts because I drive a car made in 2004. When that dies I'll be stuck with whatever CDs I have from high school/early college.

Just checked KBB and it halved in value since I bought it two years ago Guess it's not worth selling anymore. though it will suck paying insurance. maybe I'll switch to whatever state because wherever I am it will for sure be cheaper than NJ car insurance lol

I bought these new brown flats that I figured I would use a lot, but they're made of really soft leather. I wore them for the second time when going to Michigan, and they got really stained in the rain. I just also scratched them on a cement stair at work. something clicked and I was filled with the dread that I won't have income anymore and won't be able to buy new shoes

if you have an iphone, you can get the screen repaired for a lower cost than a new phone! that really sucks though

Edit: I also want to create a list of things I need to spend a crap ton of money on to tune everything up. e.g., full car tune up (if I don't sell), take shoes to shoe repair guy, get suit fitted, etc. so that way I can just have all my items in top quality shape and won't have to buy new ones.

The A/C went out in my car and will be a $1,500 fix. I figured I'd rather sell it for whatever I can get rather than worry about driving a clunker with no A/C across the country.
