Still new to this lingo and process. So if I am understanding correctly, according to your consultant, those offered an interview (JS2) are likely to be snatched up by a higher ranking school. So before admitting them, they need to see if they are legitimately interested in them, not simply using them as a "back up"?

Yield protection is when a school protects its low acceptance rate by wait listing or denying applicants with very high numbers (usually over both 75ths) who they believe will go to a higher ranking school. The consultant was saying that since s/he was a JS2 level candidate (JS2 means an acceptance to Harvard) that the interview with Columbia likely meant that they were being considered for yield protection: admissions wanted to gauge her/his interest in actually attending before offering a spot since they suspected s/he'd go somewhere else.t14ohlehdoit wrote:Still new to this lingo and process. I don't necessarily agree with the consultant that Columbia interviewing is *that* rare he would automatically assume YP (just look through this thread and its incarnation from last cycle at the number of interview requests) unless lunixer just has mind boggling numbers. They seem to interview a good amount of scholarship candidates and stats that could be seen as YP for simple admissions to Columbia probably match up quite well with Hamilton stats (Columbia's biggest merit scholarship).

I was one of the first on TLS to have a CLS interview requested and I'm not in the YP or scholarship range.
Know your numbers, know how they correspond to Columbia's and go from there. Some will be scholly, some will be YP, and some will be borderline.
Ultimately, though, why they're interviewing you isn't important. Just take the interview and do your best.

I'm also a JS2 and had my interview already, but totally didn't realize they might be thinking about YP (I was under the impression the T6 virtually never do YP because they don't need to). Luckily I'm from NYC and had done my research well so my specific interest in Columbia definitely came across well.lunixer wrote:Well if it's yield protection it would depend on how far in the JS2 camp you are. In the TLS profile of Columbia it says they recently started an interview pilot program and are expanding it year by year.lunixer wrote:It's also possible that my consultant was wrong. I think they might not have realized quite how many people are offered interviews this cycle. Any thoughts on whether it matters which admissions person you interview with at Columbia? Are some interviewers more indicative of acceptance than others?

Re: Columbia C/O 2019 Applicants - 2015 - 2016
Hey! Does anyone know anyone that was denied or waitlisted for early admission? I was "held" for early admission (GPA and LSAT at or slightly above 25th percentile, so I was kind of expecting it) but I was curious if everyone that wasn't accepted for early decision was just "held". Just curious if it was a courteous way of saying denied, or if I still actually have some kind of shot. Also, would you send a "Why Columbia" essay to admissions to show continued interest, or is there a better method to show them that my life would be complete if they accepted me?
Thanks for your help!

For any K-JDs that have responded to the email requesting updated grades: how did you respond? Did you just list your courses and their grades in a reply email to the original email (and did you list your new cumulative GPA)? In my case, this past semester took me from between 50th and 75th to above 75th, so I'd want that to be clear. (I will send in an updated transcript via LSAC as well.)

Send a thank you email to interviewer?
I was interviewed by the assistant director of admissions and was wondering what people's thoughts were on sending a thank you email or the like. I thought the interview went well, very informal, but I don't know if I stressed enough how much I want to attend Columbia as opposed to NYU or the like. Would an email saying thank you be a good touch or be seen as odd?

Always, always, always send a thank you note after an interview. It's considered very rude not to.partlycloudy wrote:I was interviewed by the assistant director of admissions and was wondering what people's thoughts were on sending a thank you email or the like. What are their methods for notification and how long after an interview does Columbia typically take? Columbia is by and away my number one so it's going to be a long wait until I get my decision.

My interviewer said post-interview decisions will go out by late January, and the spreadsheet on the first page says that the avg wait has been 12 days or something like thatpartlycloudy wrote:What are their methods for notification and how long after an interview does Columbia typically take?
