Re: Georgia 2011 Applicants
I was accepted last Thursday and just got my scholarship letter. Out of state (New York).
In state equalizer and 5k per with 2.7 stipulation.
How difficult are they to negotiate with?

My post in the other thread, for those not following it.Pricer wrote:Well, then this offer seems pretty dang good.eandy wrote:I had one class with an unusually low curve that was like 2.8, but I don't think the professors can go lower than that in 1L classes. Plus, I think it would be pretty hard to get B- and below in everything.Pricer wrote:Some people, especially OOS applicants, have been getting it with their acceptance letters in the mail. I got my acceptance letter three weeks ago, however, and just got my scholarship info today.fatduck wrote:uh so my application status says: "Your application is being reviewed by the Admissions Committee."
but i just got an email saying "congratulations on your acceptance, check out the admitted students website"
weird. anyone know when/how scholarship info gets sent out?
By the way, got $10k a year with a 2.7 stipulation. Anyone know the mean for UGA's curve?
edit: This says 2.9 curve, but not sure if I trust it.

Does anybody know if UGA reimburses travel expenses for the admitted students events?

No offense to the people OOS state, but seeing as our state is in a major budget crisis and they are cutting funding left and right for those of us who live here, no i do not think they will be reimbursing your travel expenses and if they do please let us know because I would like to write my representative and senator to express my disappointment that they cant fund kindergartens for people who live here but they can fund plane tickets for people who don't.

Might want to double check where that money's coming from before you start writing representatives. It may be contributions from alumni and the like, not tax dollars.

People who get scholarships will have to write thank you letters to their donor in the fall. I imagine the VERY limited funds they have for travel expenses come from a similar source.

Re: Georgia 2011 Applicants
Plus, paying to subsidize a trip to Georgia encourages tax revenue for the state of Georgia. A hotel room, if it doesn't put money directly into the hands of GA residents (which they too must pay taxes on), surely puts some tax money back into the state of Georgia. Then there's food for the trip and maybe entertainment that does the same.
Then, if the OOS'er does accept GA's offer to become a student, they have to pay OOS tuition the first year (unless, of course, they get an equalizer). OOS tuition (or tuition in general) will more than cover the cost of the plane ticket. Then it's in the student'sr best interest to work hard to become instate for cheaper tuition the next year. So, during the at least 3 years the person is a GA student, they will buy GA housing, shop at GA stores, go to GA entertainment, put money into GA banks, get their cars registered in GA, etc.
So don't worry, it all comes out in the wash.

At least it helps your admission to be from Georgia. The tax funded schools in California don't even give California residents preferential admission treatment.ga345 wrote:No offense to the people OOS state, but seeing as our state is in a major budget crisis and they are cutting funding left and right for those of us who live here, no i do not think they will be reimbursing your travel expenses and if they do please let us know because I would like to write my representative and senator to express my disappointment that they cant fund kindergartens for people who live here but they can fund plane tickets for people who don't.

Been in their review for 11+ weeks. An acceptance with in-state equalizer would probably send me to Athens this fall (but still waiting on IU-B and ND, so...)

<<< almost 15 weeks.
You're a more likely admit than me, though. (Yeah, I profile stalked you.)
It's like they've given up. I'm happy to not be dinged yet, but the suspense is killing me!
They don't even have to give me a scholarship! If they say the word, I'll be in Athens this August.
