so I have a general question which I'm sure applies to all schools giving financial aid packages. my c.o.a. includes the room and board, so they're factoring that in with the aid package.

what if I've found a cheaper alternative that my parents can afford, i.e. I don't want the loan money for "Room & Board". I can just tell them I don't want to accept x portion of aid, right? or basically, I will take x amount less the cost of room and board. we can do that, no?

sorry, this was messy but I had to ask.

Are you talking loan money or scholarship?

AFA loans, you can specify the exact $ you want to take

Are you talking about institutional grant money, or loans? For loans, you can deny and accept whatever portion you want.

I wish I could've negotiated with Northwestern but they gave a list of schools with whose offers they negotiate and welp, mine weren't on it.

Just gotta remember the loan fees when you are accepting loans, don't want to shortchange yourself. Depending on the school their calculator I think will show these.

Yeah most of the time it's really straight forward. The only times it gets awkward are when the schools sounds way too thirsty about it. Repeated personal emails, further imploring, bringing up legacy connections. Those are the horror stories that make me uncomfortable.
