Re: Harvard C/O 2019 Applicants
My interviewer said acceptances will start going out around new year, so I was hoping for a Christmas miracle. I could have misheard tho, and it's technically not inconsistent with after new year.grgregregre wrote:Just finished my JS1 and was told not to expect anything before the New Yeartflan19 wrote:From what I recall, only one JS1 was specifically told "after the new year", right? My interviewer said that it could be awhile and not to panic but that they hope to get back to me "sooner rather than later". I'm still entertaining the idea that maybe they just want to stress that their JS1 to JS2 turnaround time isn't as fast as some schools (UVA) and reduce panic? That might be me just desperately attempting to will and rationalize a pre-thanksgiving JS2 though. The insanity will only increase from here

Also, does anyone know the odds of acceptance if you get an early interview (Oct/Nov)? I've looked at last year's spreadsheet data, but does anyone have any insights?

There aren't any upcoming interviews scheduled, right? Maybe we'll actually see some JS2 movement soon then? *crosses impatient fingers*

How did you "bomb" the interview?cantorb wrote:Can we please add an option for "was confident about odds after getting JS1 email but totally bombed the interview"?Hildegard15 wrote:New poll!
I know that's pretty specific but I know at least one vote that will go there....

That does not sound like bombing at all. Maybe fumbling but chill.

I would give up my first born for a JS1. Is that not enough HLS?!! What more must I be willing to sacrifice?!

I think I submitted a month before you though, so I'm starting to despair. Not many people get JS1 offers after waiting 2+months.pittsburghpirates wrote:I'm in the same boat. Don't despair! Also if you don't get one I definitely won't so I can't allow you to despairHildegard15 wrote:I think I submitted a month before you though, so I'm starting to despair. I've given myself until Friday. And then, if no good news, I am going to forget I ever applied to HLS.pittsburghpirates wrote:Don't despair! Re: Harvard C/O 2019 Applicants
Decided to take a crack at answering my own question based on the 2014-2015 cycle spreadsheet (link below). Of 126 JS1's, 76 (60%) were admitted. Obviously this is a relatively small sample, but it's the best public data I've found.ObiWahooKenobi wrote:Also, does anyone know the odds of acceptance if you get an early interview (Oct/Nov)? Re: Harvard C/O 2019 Applicants
This is misleading, because while 60% reported being admitted, another 35% never updated their status. Probably closer to 75-80% of TLS JS1s actually end up being admitted.ObiWahooKenobi wrote:Decided to take a crack at answering my own question based on the 2014-2015 cycle spreadsheet (link below). Also doesn't account for the timing of the JS1s either, as earlier JS1s tend to have a higher acceptance rate than later ones (I'm pretty sure I read this somewhere but for the life of me can't remember where). Unless you only looked at the Oct/Nov JS1s? A bit unclear from your post, but regardless thanks for digging through the data!oliverotis wrote:This is misleading, because while 60% reported being admitted, another 35% never updated their status. Re: Harvard C/O 2019 Applicants
I suspect the estimates above are severely low-balling it. My optimism is obviously self-serving, but here are three reasons why I think the odds are pretty solid for JS1s so far...
1) The 2010 interview with Josh Rubenstein states HLS interviewed about 1,000-1,200 applicants, and they end up offering 900-1,000 acceptances. This puts JS1s, regardless of timing in the cycle, at 75%-95% acceptance. Admittedly, this was five years ago, but I can't find any evidence that they have ramped up their interviewing rate enough to justify the current speculation.

2) According to our spreadsheet, the average numbers for JS1s this cycle is 175/3.88. According to lsn, candidates with those numbers are accepted at an 87% rate.

3) A few pages ago, it was mentioned that somebody in last year's applicant thread estimated that Oct/Nov JS1s are accepted at a 95% rate, according to some TLS spreadsheet. Too lazy to go find that post, but it should be a few pages back--presuming it was not deleted.

Re: Harvard C/O 2019 Applicants
Yeah, someone had posted that in last year's thread, based (IIRC) on something like 80% reported admits and divvying up the 'decision pending' applicants based on an average TLS acceptance rate of 60%. Seems like probably an overestimation, since decision pending apps probably skew slightly toward WL/R. Still, I think it's fair to estimate Oct/Nov TLS JS1s are in 85-90% of the time.curious bobcat wrote:I suspect the estimates above are severely low-balling it.
