Why UVA won't necessarily save you from the eternal wait...I wrote one. But IIRC you just submitted recently no? Why not email an attachment to admissions?gold33 wrote:Wellll....guess I should have popped into this forum before submitting my app without a "Why UVA." SIGH.

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Hey folks, longtime lurker but figured it was time to finally make an account.
I'm noticing a lot of people on here talking about a "Why UVA" essay. Can someone respond or pm me about the necessity of this? I included an LSAT addendum and additional statement explaining a program UVA had I wanted to get involved in if admitted so I didn't want to overwhelm them with any additional addendums. I submitted only last week so if it's not too late and if writing one would help, I would appreciate the heads up.
Thanks!

Your addendum about their program is basically a why UVA I'd say that's good enoughBlueLaw11 wrote:Hey folks, longtime lurker but figured it was time to finally make an account.

Is a Why UVA essay people are talking about an addendum about UVA? There is no specific essay prompt in their application. Is adding a paragraph or so to the personal statement equivalent?

Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Yep, it's an addendum about the reasons why UVA is attractive to them. I think it's fine to add it into your PS if it fits (both in content and in page limit).JFO1833 wrote:Is a Why UVA essay people are talking about an addendum about UVA? Thanks for the reply Mack. The program was a community service one and it was just a brief paragraph on my background in that field/why I wanted to join the UVA one. Think that still qualifies as good enough?Mack.Hambleton wrote:Your addendum about their program is basically a why UVA I'd say that's good enoughBlueLaw11 wrote:Hey folks, longtime lurker but figured it was time to finally make an account.

Yeah, the point of a WhyX is really just to show a specific reason/interest as to why you'd like to be there.BlueLaw11 wrote:Thanks for the reply Mack. Re: UVA c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
They really should ask for a Why UVA as an optional addendum like Penn does. It's unfair to those who aren't well versed in TLS. The general assumption outside of TLS is that you do not want to overburden the admissions committee with extraneous material. So, your average applicant looks through the UVA application, see that it does not ask for a Why X, and says to himself "well, it looks like they DONT WANT another piece from me about why I want to attend UVA, and I am going to follow the common wisdom and not burden them." The sad thing is that if this applicant were aware of the fact that UVA wanted a Why UVA, he would have written one. Hell, UVA could even be his top choice, but he is convinced that writing a Why UVA would actually hurt his chances.
I really hope they change this and start explicitly asking for a Why UVA as an option addendum. Their current practice creates two classes of people:
1) Those who haven't spent a considerable amount on TLS
2) Those who have not
For UVA, discrimination in admissions is not a matter of white privilege or reverse discrimination depending on your political preference, but TLS Privilege.

It doesn't help that law schools pretend that yield protection isn't real, either.

lol, It seems to create at least four classes of peopleBillsFan9907 wrote:They really should ask for a Why UVA as an optional addendum like Penn does. 1. Those whose expression of genuine interest in UVA doesn't require a prompt. (probably people with bad judgment generally)
2. Those who don't have a genuine interest in UVA but are savvy enough to pretend to express a genuine desire in UVA
3. Those who have a genuine interest in UVA but aren't savvy enough to express that desire
4. Those who don't have a genuine interest but aren't savvy enough enough to pretend to express that desire.
I kind of lol at 4. Given the nature of law school admissions, I would bet 4 far out numbers 3. The complaint would be like, "damn, nobody told me to lie. Sooooo not cool, bro."

*shrug*
Adding on an additional page of information without prompt seems weird to me. The best judgment would seem to be supplying no more and no less than what's requested. Hence the controversy.

But yeah, in all seriousness I think I would have to agree with BillsFan's take on it. Not having an optional prompt is definitely going to keep a lot of people who are genuinely interested in UVA from expressing their interest in an addendum. I probably wouldn't have written one if it weren't for the knowledge I gained from TLS. Sorry to all the high stat WLs/dings - on the bright side though, you guys are probably looking at $$ from higher ranked schools, so best of luck.

This is hearsay but I know someone who attends UVA, is a Virginia resident and had a 3.6/3.7ish gpa and a 170 lsat. Was the only t14 that individual was accepted to.santoki wrote:can anyone that has been accepted as a VA resident attest to the mythical lower standards of admission?

wow, something must have been really wrong with that person's application to only get into one T14 with a 3.6/170. santoki, my numbers qualify me for UVA, but I think being a resident really helped me avoid YP. doesn't really answer your question, sorry.bob311 wrote:This is hearsay but I know someone who attends UVA, is a Virginia resident and had a 3.6/3.7ish gpa and a 170 lsat. can anyone shed light on how often the UVA waves are? I thought it was every Tuesday/Wednesday but I may be confusing it with another school

Any consensus on the turnaround time after interviews? Sounds like it can take a while...
My numbers are hardly impressive for UVA, so I'm kind of stunned they invited me to interview. Ugh it just makes me want them more!
