Getting paranoid now that I just misinterpreted my e-mail...what exactly did the defer e-mail say? Mine just said that upon initial review they request my fall grades and that i can stay on early decision and email a report of my grades asap or move to regular.

Among those whose apps got completed rather late (mid-November), is there anyone who has heard back already?

I was accepted ED with a 175/3.71unknownnumbers wrote:I still have yet to hear anything. I dont think my application is bad enough to warrant an outright rejection (LSAT 175, GPA 3.75, direct from undergrad), but I have not heard as part of the first round of deferrals

The almost complete radio silence from Columbia for ED applicants this late into the cycle kind of scares me. Geez.

Anyone else think maybe Columbia deferred a lot of ED applicants today in order to see how the future pool of test takers looks like? Looking at LSN, there seems an individual who got rejected; another, waitlisted. I still think a deferment is a soft rejection, but I'm just curious if anyone else has any thoughts.

Re: Columbia c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
It's really just hard to say, especially because this cycle has been a strange one. It could be that they are just getting a majority of the waitlist/deferments/rejections out of the way before a big wave of acceptances. Or they could have a big pool of RD applicants they like (and given the nature of their status checker, we have no idea who is under review or when people went UR). My hunch is that it is a combination of all three factors, and we'll probably just have to be patient and see what happens (a tough task, I know haha).KevinP wrote:Anyone else think maybe Columbia deferred a lot of ED applicants today in order to see how the future pool of test takers looks like? What is going on with Columbia? They only accepted a few people on tls and already deferred people yesterday. Being one of the people still waiting for a response, I think that if there isn't an acceptance email today or tomorrow then its almost a sure waitlist/rejection.

Re: Columbia c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
My best guess is that this delay is caused by the massive drop in apps this year. I know that I personally outperformed my #'s based on last year's LSN and $$$ I got from other schools by a decent margin. I would bet a lot of this is Columbia trying to figure out their plan of attack for maintaining medians, yields, and etc., probably also trying to review as many RD apps as possible before deciding on ED (trying to maximize utility of the binding nature of ED accepts)... At least that's what I would do in their shoes.
Either way, they have to tell you something before Jan, and both defferals and admits continue to roll out. A cause for hope is that some admits so far are with lower #'s than they admitted last year (as is the case at other schools).
Just my $0.02

If you are right it's very encouraging, could my 171/3.77 actually get me in?
