ok I should have indicated i'm a RD applicant... Does anyone know how long it takes a RD applicant to go complete?
Columbia is the only school that hasn't completed me... it's been over two weeks since I got the completion pending letter..

Columbia gets a paper application. Mine took about 9 days (but I submitted on a Saturday, so I'd say like 6-9 depending).

I think CW is that Columbia kind of screws its ED applicants in the way of all kinds of aid. They certainly take advantage of their incentives as much as possible to be numbers-competitive with HYS. Taking money away from ED applicants and putting it toward more Butlers and Hamiltons is certainly helpful to that end.

So I've been browsing the old CLS threads and these are some things of interest:

• The earliest any ED applicant on this board last year heard back was 11/26, but that was somebody who had good numbers and basically applied the day the apps became available.
  A few ED applicants were requested by CLS to update with fall grades to consider that person for an ED spot (one of them had a 3.9x pre-update, the grade requests looked completely random).
  Acceptances looked like they were e-mailed to the applicant in PDF form, but deferrals/rejections were sent out by snail mail.
  It sounds like the first couple weeks of December are going to be a living hell for us early decision folks.

You do realize that now I'm going to do the same, even though you recapped it for us.

Does anyone have an explanation for why almost all 3.6-3.8 / 173 applicants were accepted to Columbia, but about half of the 3.9 / 173 applicants were waitlisted? Columbia is my top choice outside of Stanford and Yale--but looking at the LSN graphs is making me nervous.

Two words: yield protect.

Yeah, I realize that's a possibility. It just seems crazy they'd YP someone who is so borderline at HYS to begin with. I guess I'm hoping if I end up on a waitlist I can write a killer LOCI or something.

That is strange, but I definitely would not call it YP. Since they accept most of the applicants who have competitive HYS numbers (like 3.9, 175+)

It might just be a sampling error, especially considering that the trend (if you can call it that) looks like it only applies to last year and none of the cycles before. If you look at the 175+ LSAT's it really doesn't look like they do any YP'ing.

As an aside, did anyone write a "Why Columbia?" addendum? I've recently been introduced to the idea of writing "Why ______?" essays for schools that don't ask for them, and I was considering sending one over.

Yes, I wrote one in large part to show why Columbia was my first choice in a perhaps futile attempt to argue that I'm not just using the ED as a ploy to get a little ED advantage, that the school really does address some specific issues for me, and that I've done my homework. It was a page and a quarter double spaced 12 pt. font.

Typically I would not have written one, and I didn't for schools like UChi and NYU.

I applied last week and haven't heard anything from them. I understand that it takes awhile to go complete as they request a paper report, but I haven't received any email acknowledgment from Columbia at all. I received one from most other schools. Is this the norm? When did they email you?

I mailed mine in on the 11th and got an e-mail on the 20th.

It took nine days from when I sent it to when they sent me the received / complete email. If you're applying to NYU, they don't send you anything period, just FYI.

I don't think anyone has got anything from NYU. It's been like twelve days for me, but a month and a half for several others. Someone from last cycle said they never got anything until they were accepted in December.

acceptances also came in snail mail form without any online notification - very weird

I applied to NYU over a month ago and I have yet to receive anything from them, you got an email?
