I propose that the OP gives an award to those who chose TCR in the poll.FreeTheChief wrote:In yesterday with $$$ as well. Seems like they are giving out slightly less money this year then the last few years though. Interesting to see all the 32k scholarships people are saying they received as well. Kind of an odd amount especially for in-state people, but still pretty generous. Glad they got the decisions out before the weekend so we can celebrate accordingly.

My status checker says waitlist. I'm above the 75ths and I got accepted into all of the higher ranked schools I applied to. Very confused

Probably YP, they know you're likely not to attend. If you're seriously interested, I would send a LOCI that reiterates that.PSPSPSPS wrote:My status checker says waitlist. I'm above the 75ths and I got accepted into all of the higher ranked schools I applied to. Very confused

My application went into review on 01/05. It's been a week and still not status change, this is horse shit!

WichitaSchocker, fellow Wichitan here.WichitaShocker wrote:Hey all, current 1L here from out of state if anyone has any questions.
Three questions:
1. How much would you say that the average student spends on books per semester there?
2. Where do most law students live?
3. Do you find that people in your class are pretty willing to be friends/friendly/share notes with each other? Is UIUC as relaxed and collegial as they say?
Thanks!

1) It really depends on how you get your books, I've spent probably $800 total for the two semesters, but I was a dumb 1L. You can definitely do cheaper, and you should avoid buying from the bookstore at all costs.
2) As for places to live there are 3 common options:
The Village in Savoy - cheap, both in price and quality, but most people seem to be able to stand it because of the price. Warning - it is pretty far from downtown champaign and campustown, so getting home drunk is difficult.
Campustown - I'm not sure on pricing here, but I'm 100% sure it is more expensive than the village. That said it is definitely the most "active" option. There are a ton of clubs/bars with plenty to do.
Downtown Champaign - this is where I live, it's probably the most expensive option, but I love having everything I need near by. Plus there are several chill bars near by, and it's withing walking distance of campustown (except in the winter, fuck that, that is why God made Uber)
Some people live in Urbana and other areas, but I think these three are the most common.
P.s. I mentioned price difference, but it doesn't really matter, Champaign Urbana has the cheapest COL I've ever seen.
3) It is absolutely true, it is amazing how close the law students are. I have not seen any true gunners. (some people are over the top in class, but just ignore that) No one will try to trip you up, and if you need help you can always find it.

1. By cheaper options for books, do you mean buying them second hand or from online retailers as opposed to the bookstore?WichitaShocker wrote:Hopefully another Shocker fan too, I need reinforcements up here!d237 wrote:WichitaSchocker, fellow Wichitan here.WichitaShocker wrote:Hey all, current 1L here from out of state if anyone has any questions.

2. Is there "bar review" at UIUC.
3. I've gotten a lot of criticism from family members for wanting to go to UIUC. They claim its out there in the "boonies" or countryside and theres nothing to do there. Could you speak a bit about the social life that exists at UIUC and in Urbana/Champaign as well? Are there fun things to do when you're not studying? In particular, I'm interested whether or not there are any good restaurants (I'm a foodie).
Thanks.

2. Yes, the SBA hosts a bar review semi-regularly, a barn dance, and a semi-formal
3. It's a typical college town-campus bars frequented by undergrads and a downtown area frequented by grads/working area professionals. You won't be bored, but it certainly isn't a bustling metropolis with loads of diversity. The area has some decent restaurants, but if your asking if any restaurants have deconstructed dishes with ambergris a la Alinea, then no, you'll be slightly disappointed.

Just want to add that if you're used to a big city, you definitely can get bored living here. I love the school, but I drive to Chicago any opportunity that I get. Law school events help. Definitely do softball.

Is there a big emphasis on school sports? It is a big ten school from what I understand.KamronK wrote:Just want to add that if you're used to a big city, you definitely can get bored living here. Both of our teams in major sports are pretty bad, so many people focused on their undergrad teams. There was still a pretty good group of law students at the football games, and the tailgates seemed to be pretty popular. This is a basketball school though, so that'll be pretty big here if the team can finally get it together.Harry_Pluxen wrote:Is there a big emphasis on school sports? Edit: From what I heard from my friends in Vancouver, you'll notice a huge difference in just about any school in the U.S. when it comes to sports.

I am coming from a much colder part of Canada than Vancouver...
