Welcome!thetravelinglawyer wrote:Checking in! Applying to all the Texas schools but will be practicing internationally. And ditto on Elle Woods - She's a huge reason I started dreaming of going to law school!

Sounds like quite a few people (you, Salander, LegallyAurora) are interested in working abroad. Do you guys know what type of law you'd want to practice internationally??
Thanks so much!terrier27 wrote:Hey y'all! About to start at Chicago so waiting out an extremely long summer and would be more than happy to help/give any advice. Really wish there was a thread like this during my cycle.
PS Elle Woods single handedly got me through LSAT prep

Re: 0L Ladies - Female C/O 2019 Applicants
I actually live in France but will be coming back to Texas to go to law school. My husband has a 3-5 year work contract in Dallas so I have a few years to kill and I figure it's the perfect time to pursue a dream I've always had! I'll be aiming for a JD/MBA program. I run a few businesses, one of which is an online consulting/mentorship company for microbusiness owners (less than 5 employees) in arts or service based industries. I think after law school I'd really like to focus on that, perhaps transition it into a solo practice. My first job was as an artist in a service-based industry, and I saw so many people who were SO talented but ruined their careers because of poor legal, financial, or administrative decisions, so I'd like to take what I have learned in law and business school and use that to help people avoid those mistakes and navigate tricky situations. After the contract ends in Dallas my spouse and I plan to travel full-time and raise a family so I think that would be something I could do online/part-time which is crucial. My focus will be mostly US businesses but also Canadian, UK, and Australian businesses as well as English-speaking expats living abroad, so I'll need to do some learning outside of just US law. Obviously I am very much not the traditional applicant! I also have no clue where that will fall in terms of specialties. A little bit of corporate, a little bit of IP, a little bit of constitutional law.. I have a feeling this is the beginning of a long process of trying to figure out my place in the legal world!barley wrote:Sounds like quite a few people (you, Salander, LegallyAurora) are interested in working abroad. Re: 0L Ladies - Female C/O 2019 Applicants
Hi ladies!
Awesome thread, thanks for starting it!!
I currently attend undergrad in NC and although I want to practice in the Southeast, Duke is NOT on my list of schools to apply to. Something about being AA AND female has me thinking I will not enjoy my three years there haha.
I am from New York and I have NO interest in moving back towards the Northeast haha. My disdain for such has crossed some potential schools off of my list.
I think someone asked about going to visit schools before acceptance? I actually plan to visit one in 2 weeks. Obviously, the application has not even opened yet so this is definitely before acceptance. I do not qualify for any LSAC Fee Waivers so visits are playing an important role of where I bother spending money to apply to.
I know this topic has been beat to the ground and dragged through the pits of Hell, but I want more opinions specific to this situation...
What should I wear for this tour?! Again, I have not applied yet, but keep in mind it's just a group tour. Also, it's a school in Florida- so consider weather and campus atmosphere please? I was thinking jeans and a nice blouse. I do not want to go the business casual route (I'll be on vacation and I honestly don't want to pack unnecessary stuff JUST for this tour). Would jeans and a blouse be fine?

Although it seems like a long way away, where I want to practice after law school is weighing heavy in my decisions on where to apply. I really want to target the SoFl Market, though I heard its hard to break into. I have family in Ft. Lauderdale though. The only other places in the Southeast I would consider living in are Charlotte and Atlanta, but Miami beat them out.Hildegard15 wrote:Where is everyone hoping to practice after law school? I know it's a long ways away but is anyone attached to a particular region? I'm thinking I'll probably end up long term in either Boston or Seattle. 10 years from now I may laugh at this but it's my guess now

From what I've read, for the most part you have three options.. A VLO, a solo practice with very eclectic cases (this is my plan), or a US-based international firm focusing on corporate law and/or arbitration. This article sums up a lot of what I have learned in my research: http://abovethelaw.com/2014/03/planning ... ight-firm/Hildegard15 wrote:For those of you hoping to practice abroad, is the goal to work at an international company with offices abroad? I assume it would be difficult to practice law in another country after studying in the US unless you were doing business law. Correct me if I'm wrong please

Personally the goal is to stay in the US (at least for awhile), but I do have interest in international courts and comparative law. If I get the chance to utilize my degree abroad, I will gladly use itHildegard15 wrote:For those of you hoping to practice abroad, is the goal to work at an international company with offices abroad? If I were to work abroad, I'd be interested in international human rights law, so working for an NGO or something like the ICJ would be fantastic (understatement).Hildegard15 wrote:For those of you hoping to practice abroad, is the goal to work at an international company with offices abroad? Hi all - Long-time lurker here. Love this thread! My undergrad was 60-40 ladies, so ratio is definitely a consideration, though not likely to be a dealbreaker. Hope everyone's app process is going well so far

Also, this is awkward, but I think the reason I've never felt the desire to watch Legally Blonde is because I kept getting it mixed up with White Girls. I don't know why. I don't know how. But I did.
