Re: Yale c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
Pro Cali and pro ending up on the West Coast. I also like the smaller class size at Stanford. I also feel like it's a school on the rise.Hildegard15 wrote:Hey, if you pick Yale or Stanford over Harvard, it gives me a better chance at getting off the Harvard wait listDcc617 wrote:Definitely over Harvard (I know that hurts you Hilde), maybe over Stanford (I love the idea of going to Stanford).Hildegard15 wrote:
Would you pick Yale over HS? You may have a chance of getting in. I think you have a compelling story.are you just pro California? Is that why the Stanford love?
I think you have a pretty good shot at Harvard outright. Your numbers are in range, and with the huge class size there I feel like there aren't a ton of 174 3.8ers out there to fill up the class. I'd be willing to put money on you getting in.

I'd also be interested in knowing this, Dcc617. Would this be if you got into Harvard but not Stanford? If the largest reason you're considering not applying to Yale is you psyching yourself out, I think you should apply! If you think you're somewhat competitive for Harvard and Stanford, aren't you for Yale as well?Hildegard15 wrote: Let's say January rolls around, what type of outcomes would you need to see in order to be convinced to throw an app Yale's way?

I have learned to be a pessimist with regard to the admissions process. And my relationship with Harvard is already too unhealthy so I'm trying to bring myself down to some level of normalcy in an effort to preserve my sanity should I get dinged.
Let's say January rolls around, what type of outcomes would you need to see in order to be convinced to throw an app Yale's way?
I think if my cycle just goes awesome, and I get into Harvard and Stanford and everywhere with scholarships, then I think I could make the case that my application profile is super strong. Then I may decide to go for Yale. But if it's not a perfect cycle, then I'll figure that my profile isn't that great. I think I'm competitive for Harvard because it's more numbers based, and Stanford really likes military. Yale is basically a more competitive Stanford for admissions, except I don't think they'll like me as much.salander wrote: I'd also be interested in knowing this, Dcc617. I'm from the South but am west coast at heart. I've visited and love it out there, it's beautiful, and I fit in a lot better than I do with Southerners. I've always kind of wanted to end up on the west coast.
And Hilde, I'm getting my hopes irrationally up for Stanford. Like, I'm making life plans around going there. So if I stop posting right around decision time, you all should be able to figure out what happened.

Well, according to Asha's blog they're looking for more applicants from the south and more military applicants. So ya never know.

Yeah, maybe. But I'm not trying to turn this into a 'convince me to apply' discussion haha. What are some of you out there thinking by applying? Hilde? Salander? I'm sorry but I really don't get the whole "I doubt I'll get in, so I'm not gonna waste the $100 bucks" schtick, especially with your stats. For me, a .1% at Yale is still worth $100. I get it if your a 3.0/155, but honestly your crazy for not applying. I'm not really trying to convince you to apply, just expressing shockDcc617 wrote:Yeah, maybe. And I get that you'd take S over Y, but that's not really a reason not to apply. There have been people who got Y and not S before, its not totally unheard of. I think I'd take H over S, but I'm still applying to both.
(Disclaimer: I do have fee waivers for all this, but even if I didn't I'd absolutely scrape together the $ for the apps).

Same thing with Hilde in terms of the "Why the hell not?" thought. If Yale's a black box for (basically) everyone, I feel like there's nothing to lose by applying. I am also in love with their alumsDcc617 wrote: Yeah, maybe. But I'm not trying to turn this into a 'convince me to apply' discussion haha. What are some of you out there thinking by applying? Hilde? Wow, you even had an Asha appearance in your dreams. So is this post going to be the start of your new Yale 250?jettison63 wrote: Last night I dreamed that I was in an NYC library getting into a fight with my boyfriend in one of the study rooms. (don’t actually have a bf and in the dream he was lackluster) We walked out and Asha was in the next room over, leaving as well and it was clear she’d heard everything. I then realized I left my bag in a cab with my computer and needed my computer to Skype for the Yale interview (I know they don’t do interviews and don't know why I needed my comptuer). So I frantically ran around pounding on cab windows asking if they had my bag. I was about to miss my interview when I woke up.

Ben, welcome, and congrats on UVA!
I'm surprised Yale hasn't released Class of 2018 medians yet.

Re: Yale c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
I think the 250 would be more fun to write than the personal statement. If I end up applying I think I'll use it to state something kind of interesting about myself that would be impossible to put on a resume (I'm aware that's absurdly vague but I already have my specific idea).Hildegard15 wrote:I'm not worried about it mostly because of all the time we will have to work on it. And like you say, there's not a lot you can do with 250 words. I already am 95% sure I've decided on what I'm going to write about.benwyatt wrote:I'm actually not that concerned about my 250 and maybe I should be?Hildegard15 wrote:
Join us all for the Yale Mary! At least we have an extra month to write the 250. No other school releases their app close to that date so they will get my undivided attention for close to two whole weeks.
I don't know, I have a few ideas for it and 250 words is really very short.
I bet that Hilde is going to talk about why shotguns and chainsaws are groovy. Ben is going to discuss the hidden dangers of beer advertisements. Salander is going to speculate whether robots should ever be trusted.
Am I close?
EDIT Because I thought of cleverer essay topics

Ok, I may have gone a bridge too far, but each essay topic is somehow relevant to all of your avatars. And they have the same relationship to each avatar.Hildegard15 wrote:Shot guns and chainsaws are so pedestrian. Give me some credit. Okay, so I am going to explain this joke, because it is clever dammit.Dcc617 wrote: I bet that Hilde is going to talk about why shotguns and chainsaws are groovy. Ben is going to discuss the hidden dangers of beer advertisements. Salander is going to speculate whether robots should ever be trusted.

Lucy Lawless played Xena, and is also going to be star in an upcoming Evil Dead series. The protagonist of the series, Ash, is known for his boomstick (shotgun) and chainsaw hand. He also says groovy a lot.
Adam Scott plays both Ben Wyatt in Parks and Rec and Henry Pollard in the series Party Down. In that series the character's acting career is derailed after a beer commercial.
In the original films, Salander is played by Noomi Rapace. Rapace also stars in Prometheus, where she fights aliens alongside an android who she had previously mistrusted.
See! Clever!
