Well, I'm international. I got in before Christmas and received a pretty hefty merit-based scholarship a week or so afterwards!![]()
My relevant stats are as follows:
LSAT, 168
GPA, Superior (International students receive rankings)
and average softs
UCI is offering me 45k the first year and said that I can get that amount renewed for my second and third year if I maintain good academic standing and a minimum GPA of 2.5. I'm just a little confused as I'm not familiar with how this works but is that standard for domestic students as well?
I've heard a lot of rumors about the chances international students have in getting admitted into American law schools. Some say exactly what you've been told but some say that we have more disadvantages when it comes to JD admissions because the market is already supersaturated with foreigners. Who really knows? I can only speak with confidence as to my case with UCI - they don't seem very interested in milking me for money.

It says on one of the posts in the above link that there is a total of four grades; BELOW AVERAGE, AVERAGE, ABOVE AVERAGE, and SUPERIOR. I'm assuming LSAC does this because of the high disparity among grading systems in different countries!

Re: UC Irvine c/o 2018
What country are you applying from, carolkpark?
Interesting how they classify GPA into those categories. I wonder if this will affect me significantly. I am applying out of Canada to UC Irvine and several other US law schools. We use the same type of grading system for undergrad here, on a 4.0/4.3 system with letter grades. According to these categories I'm somewhere in the above average category...interesting. Needless to say, they converted my GPA easily onto the LSDAS GPA without issue.
Can someone who is a current UC irvine student comment on whether or not there are many international students at the law school currently? Or comment on your won experience during the admissions process if you are one?

I read somewhere on TLS that Canada is one of the few, if not only, international country(ies) where LSAC counts your GPA like normal.Harry_Pluxen wrote:What country are you applying from, carolkpark?

The whole southern part of the county where Irvine/Newport Beach/Tustin resides fits the conventional nice OC life. As you go north, cities like Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Westminster, Anaheim gets a bit more shady. At the north side of the county, Fullerton, Buena Park, Brea, Yorba Linda aren't too bad again.Harry_Pluxen wrote:How is the OC area?nlee10 wrote:I'm not applying to UCI until next cycle but I do currently live around there. A car is necessary to get around as public transportation is lacking, especially in the Irvine area.

South Korea. My undergrad's grading system wasn't drastically different from that commonly used in the US but it operated on a 4.5 scale. Since you didn't have any problems with LSAC/LSDAS, I don't see why there is any reason to worry

I'm pretty curious about the answers to the questions Harry_Pluxen asked too!

That is true. I work in downtown and LA traffic is worse but OC traffic is far from pleasant haha Like you said, you just get used to it. I heavily considered UCI for my undergrad so I have been on the campus numerous times. The Law School and the Business School building are all brand new and really nice. It is all very cookie cutter as far as the surrounding area goes. If you look up suburbs in the dictionary it is probably a picture of Irvine haha. So cal is so centrally located that you can be at the beach, mountain, desert, or lake (or Mexico if you really want to go all out) within a couple of hours. Irvine is nice, safe, and clean. You wont be disappointed in the city itself. If you need some night life Newport is down the street and has plenty of it.

Even if one stays near campus? Are there any grocery stores, bars, restaurants, other recreation + necessities that are within walking distance?nlee10 wrote:The whole southern part of the county where Irvine/Newport Beach/Tustin resides fits the conventional nice OC life. In theory, you could get by without a car for the basics. However, I think it becomes more of an issue when you start thinking about networking, interning, working off campus as time goes on.Harry_Pluxen wrote:Even if one stays near campus? You can get to grocery stores, restaurants, the gym on campus, some hiking trails without a car. But the immediately adjacent towns have so much more to offer, so it'd be a shame to miss out. There are almost no bars in Irvine, save those inside of restaurants, whereas Newport Beach/Costa Mesa/Corona del Mar have quite a few. FWIW, my friend has lived by UCI for ~14 years now and never learned to drive. He walks everywhere he can, and relies on rides from friends when we go out/get together. It doesn't bother him-- it's just a different lifestyle. The international students in my lab usually get a bike when they first get here, and then get a car within a year, once they realize the need.Harry_Pluxen wrote:Even if one stays near campus?
