I think it varies by school. I know Baylor, Illinois, and some other schools near their rankings give out full tuition schollies on merit but with UH's stingy reputation, I also feel like they don't.ilikebaseball wrote:Its actually sorta rare for any law school to give full tuition just based on merit. From every school I'm applying to, they'll offer a TON of money, but if you want a full ride, you have to fill out some separate application and do an interview or something like that. I would doubt UH gives out full rides just based on merit, but I could be wrong. Tbh, I haven't even looked lolPhattypattyfrost wrote:Does UH Law give full tuition scholarships? what is usually the length of turnaround for a decision after being put in review?

IMO, UH's reputation for being stingy is overblown. They tend to view SMU as their main competition, which given quality and market is a fair assessment. And they also tend to give out $$ and residency waivers that put their COA on par with SMU, but this can seem stingy when SMU gives $30k/year and UH gives $7,500 and you end up looking at an annual COA at SMU of $37k for 1L at SMU and $40k for 1L at UH (but with SMU likely climbing faster for 2L and 3L).

Hi all, I do not go to UH Law, but I did go to UH for my undergrad and lived in Houston for 15 years, so I can try to answer general questions about the school or the city if you have any.

What are the chances of finding affordable rent in a decent location near the law school? I'm not talking about like an expensive loft apartment or anything, just an average 1 bedroom in a decent area.Stevoman wrote:Hi all, I do not go to UH Law, but I did go to UH for my undergrad and lived in Houston for 15 years, so I can try to answer general questions about the school or the city if you have any.

There's no perfect fit for your preferences but here's some insight. The area immediately surrounding UH (the Third Ward) is on the low end of the economic scale and has some personal security issues so the prices are relatively lower than most areas with its proximity to downtown Houston. On the other hand, property values are on the rise as the campus improves and private residential companies develop the areas adjacent to campus. On campus housing prices vary, I would recommend the Calhoun Lofts if you want convenient on-campus housing with several other grad/honors students and some professors. It's located across a parking lot from the law school and across the street from some brand new cafes/restaurants, not mention one of the two on-campus bars...that's a plus in my book. However, "the Lofts" are higher in the on-campus price range. Hope this helps!p1921 wrote:What are the chances of finding affordable rent in a decent location near the law school? Went complete on 12/5 and in review 1/12. Date changed yesterday to 1/29. Does anyone know if this means anything?

No, it says on the SC that the date may change but it's just for administrative purposesjbmullin wrote:Went complete on 12/5 and in review 1/12. Date changed yesterday to 1/29. Does anyone know if this means anything?

Yeah I thought I had seen that somewhere. I hope it at least means I'm getting close to a decision! I don't think they know what to do with me at 166/2.3 though.

All this. The Lofts are on campus, but feel a lot more like apartment living instead of dorm living. Super expensive though, a friend of mine had a postage stamp sized efficiency, and I think it cost him around $800 (in 2010). There really isn't anywhere "nice" immediately around UH. I also know some people that lived on the other side of I-45 and south of TX-59, around the Minute Maid park area; that area is getting nicer but still not what I would call "nice." Some other guys I knew lived along Westheimer/Alabama/Richmond. There are some decent places along there, but probably a bit more since you're closer to night life.TX_UH wrote:There's no perfect fit for your preferences but here's some insight. Re: University of Houston Law Center c/o 2018 Applicants
I didn't get an email from them, but I just randomly checked my status check, and it said I was waitlisted.
Is this normal for UH? Or normal for other law schools?
Thanks.

+1. Haven't received an email from them, but checked my status checker and it said decision rendered. It's been two days now.gyungchul1414 wrote:I didn't get an email from them, but I just randomly checked my status check, and it said I was waitlisted.

Check the top of the SC page. It usually says what kind of decision was rendered.ncc1701 wrote:+1. Haven't received an email from them, but checked my status checker and it said decision rendered. Re: University of Houston Law Center c/o 2018 Applicants
damn, still in review. Congrats to all the admits today!
I feel like they're holding my application, even though I probably have the #'s to get in (probably jinxed myself). Most schools just told me/asked me about holding my application until my next LSAT came out, but I've been in review at Houston for far longer than usual, so maybe that's the case? Even though Idk if its gonna make that much of a difference. Guess we'll see
