Re: Harvard c/o 2018 (2014-2015 applicants)
Genuinely not a troll! I'm interested in HLS because (a) it has amazing clinics; (b) the public interest career office is basically the best in the biz, and (c) HLS has a great LRAP. Obviously those are options in the first place in part because HLS is preftigious, but I don't care about the preftige for its own sake. I'd imagine few of you do either, right? (I hope?) Like, preftige is useful because it helps HLS grads get jerbs or w/e, but it's not good in and of itself. I'm not interested in being able to tell some rando I'm sitting next to on the plane or someone I'm trying to pick up in a bar that I go to Harvard, because that would be weird. I was genuinely really surprised that everyone marked it in the poll, and was actually thinking I'd really like to hear what people mean by preftige or why they care about it. Maybe we're just interpreting the question differently?hereisonehand wrote:Who are these trolls that choose something other than 'prestige' on the poll?
Anyway, like y'all, not gonna happen, but yolo, so applying.
New poll idea:
If you went to HLS, where would you tell people you go to school?
a) Boston
b) just outside Boston
c) not in Boston, but nearby. not Tufts.
d) Cambridge
e) New England
f) Harvard
g) Harvard Law School
h) BU

No joke, the last time I was on a plane the person sitting next to me did this exact same thing. You were right, it was weird...everything_bagel wrote: I'm not interested in being able to tell some rando I'm sitting next to on the plane or someone I'm trying to pick up in a bar that I go to Harvard, because that would be weird.

My thing is, yeah you might put some people off by saying you go to Harvard Law, but you did the work to get there. If I get in, heck yeah I'm going to say that's where I go to school.

I don't think most people where I live would know what cambridge is (or make the cambridge -> harvard connection)

Definitely wouldn't be trying to use it to brag/get laid, but I'd be proud I went to HLS and say that's where I went. Wouldn't bring it up unless asked though.. I know people that name drop schools that aren't even that big of a deal, that's the worst.

Yeah this could be a problem if after you responded "boston" they asked which school specifically. Then if you said "Harvard" they would be like "wow you conceited bastard, you didn't want to say your school's name because you believe that saying it would be bragging. How pompous of you to think such a thing."james.bungles wrote:seems more douchey to say "oh i go to school in boston" instead of just saying where you go to school. like oh I don't want to offend you with muh prefstigeeverything_bagel wrote:Genuinely not a troll! I don't think there's anything wrong with saying Harvard Law, as long as this information was asked of you and it's not information that was unprompted.

I feel like most conversations go "What do you do?" > Imma grad student. "Oh, where?" > Harvard Law (because they'll probably ask what you're studying there, so drop that law bomb quick).
I can't even imagine the question where 'Boston' would be the right response.

Re: Harvard c/o 2018 (2014-2015 applicants)
I don't think it would be that weird to say you're a grad student in Boston and quickly shift the conversation to Italian food or gentrification in JP or the AL east pennant or whatever, but evidently I'm in the minority here. I think the level of douchey is more dependent on your apparent intention. Are you trying to avoid dropping the h bomb because it's just so ~*preftigious*~ or because it's not relevant? To be fair I'd prob say the same thing about wherever I went to school, because what is up with nosy acquaintances? I'm literally never going to see this guy again; what does he care?HorseThief wrote:I feel like most conversations go "What do you do?" > Imma grad student. Your random use of quiz form reminds me of Gone Girl. Also lol at "little"smccgrey wrote:"What do you do?"
"I'm a law student!"
"Oh cool! Where?"
a) "NOT YALE. FUCK."
b) "The only place Rachel Zane was rejected from, and if you don't know what that means, we aren't friends."
c) "Harvard!!!!!"
d) "Oh, just this little place in Cambridge, Massachusetts."

Everyone here convinced me. I picked "Harvard Law" (though I'd probably communicate it as "oh I'm in law school at Harvard"). I could see the Boston answer being appropriate depending on context though. What a dilemma to have... don't want to get my hopes up too high haha.

You all think you'll say HLS, but you haven't experienced it yet. Shit gets surprisingly weird when you mention where you are going to new people. People you have just met will form a complete (and likely inaccurate) picture of you just from that H-word, which kind of sucks.
That said, don't do the Boston thing.

Re: Harvard c/o 2018 (2014-2015 applicants)
Eh, if they ask me outright what school I'm going to I'll say HLS, but otherwise if they ask "what do you do" or whatever, I say that I'm about to be going to law school (I guess in a couple days I'll actually be able to say "I go to law school"!). Most of the time people don't ask where and just leave it at that. So basically, I don't recommend doing the weird hinting around where you go to school thing, but I do recommend maneuvering away from that line of questioning.xylocarp wrote:What answer do you recommend, as a now-1L?TheMostDangerousLG wrote:You all think you'll say HLS, but you haven't experienced it yet. Oh man, I wish I could pretend that my impending law school future was responsible for my neuroticism, but I'd be lying to myself. X)
