Wow that is very cool. Congrats! But are you saying that they said they don't anticipate using the WL this year?bluebonnetss wrote:update on phone call: it looks like they've pretty much confirmed their incoming class, but i was offered a guaranteed spot for next year's class! good luck to all of you!

Disclaimer *** I know nothing about the internal process of how this came about at UVA***
That said, it is odd to me that UVA would do this to/for what will very soon by a new dean of admission. Unless it is an internal hire, or they discussed with who the new hire will be, I am a bit surprised.
Also, I wonder about the scholarship stipulations, or lack thereof, with this offer.
Just thinking out loud...

Re: UVA Waitlist Class of 2017
Seems a bit early to decide that they are not using the wait list considering that most school's deposit dates are still around the corner. So maybe these deferred offers are to people they regret not admitting and want to give them an offer next year potentially before they have to deposit somewhere else?
Would you guys have to deposit at UVA for next year soon and say you wont apply elsewhere, or could you sit out a cycle and proceed normally just knowing you would be in at UVA?

Have you ever heard of UVA or other schools doing this in the past? Sounds like an odd admissions practice, but I'm no expert.MikeSpivey wrote:Disclaimer *** I know nothing about the internal process of how this came about at UVA***

Re: UVA Waitlist Class of 2017
yes, we'd have to deposit for next year and sign a deferral contract. we didn't talk about scholarship stuff at all so that's completely up in the air. they still have two more deposit deadlines to go so i think there still is a chance if you're on the WL - it just sounded like after the first deposit deadline they received more deposits than they had anticipated.pixy1900 wrote:Seems a bit early to decide that they are not using the wait list considering that most school's deposit dates are still around the corner. Re: UVA Waitlist Class of 2017
So I applied Early Decision in September and was waitlisted.
I visited in February and sent an LOCI in March.
I e-mailed on Tuesday after their deadline on the 21st. The director of admissions I met on my visit told me to call him Friday. Got pushed back to today. Just got off the phone--
He said that deposits were strong on Monday and looking at past years data compared to this year the trend with deposits makes it likely they won't need to use their wait list this year, or if they do it will be very few.
As UVA is my top choice I'm going to stay on the WL until they flat out reject me but for all intents and purposes I'll proceed as if it's not happening.

It seems really odd. I hope they are not depending on 1st deposits because obviously lots of people double deposit and would get off other waitlists

Re: UVA Waitlist Class of 2017
It is peculiar for a number of reasons. In the boom years law schools would, at times, offer admitted students extra scholarship money to defer because they messed up their enrollment numbers and were about to anger every faculty member with a grotesquely huge class, but I have never seen something like this on the WL.Superresplitter wrote:Have you ever heard of UVA or other schools doing this in the past? Applications are still down and they are still down in the LSAT bandwidth UVA rests in. So I would be very skeptical of early deposit numbers if I were them. PLUS, not a single person outside of maybe LSAC and LSAT prep companies has a good guess on what the data pool next cycle might be like. One reason schools often do not grant deferrals for people they are admitting off of the WL is because of this very reason -- they want a near clean slate for the next cycle.
Frankly I am a bit perplexed.

Is someone trolling as they aim to fill a position in the near future!?!?!MikeSpivey wrote: It is peculiar for a number of reasons. I have yet to be able to figure out exactly what the world "troll" means, but maybe!JustHawkin wrote:Is someone trolling as they aim to fill a position in the near future!?!?!MikeSpivey wrote: It is peculiar for a number of reasons. I would not necessarily believe an adcomm at this point, personally.
All I can think of is that they really liked the apps of the three to whom they extended this offer, but cannot take anymore splitters this cycle..? (looks like you three are splitters, right?)

Yeah I'm a splitter. Hoping this isn't true as this is my top school and I would go if they accepted me this cycle.wealtheow wrote:I would not necessarily believe an adcomm at this point, personally.

Is this deferred admission claim bullshit or not? Uva is one of the few schools I thought pulled from their waitlist quite liberally.

Well I haven't been released, and I haven't received deferred admission. Congrats to those who received the latter!

I was waitlisted but did not send an LOCI. I was not dinged, however. Is this a good sign? I did not need to send in a confirmation that I wanted to be on the WL, right?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
