Re: UNC c/o 2017 (2013-2014)
Talked to a UNC prof on Friday, and she said scholly info will be coming in the next two weeks. UNC is among my top two due to their amazing joint degree program with the school of journalism & mass comm, so I'm hoping for a little bit. LSN scholarship graph looks promising for a bit of $ (maybe around $10K/yr). I'll post when I hear.Yanky91 wrote:Congrats. That's awesome. I just hope they have some room for me. Anyone know what the date changes mean for "complete?" I just got my third one today. Submitted 1/3.

I never got complete date changes at UNC, but at other schools I did. They generally mean you're just moving through the review process.inyoureyes89 wrote:Anyone know what the date changes mean for "complete?" I just got my third one today. Submitted 1/3.

They don't do rolling admissions. Last year, there were some people who went complete in early Nov. and didn't hear back until early April.

Re: UNC c/o 2017 (2013-2014)
I've been complete since 12/04. UNC was the last of my apps to go complete (by about a week) and I have already heard back from every other school except Vandy. I am a splitter though, and from what I have heard UNC isn't very splitter friendly (can anyone verify this?). I am out of stater also, so I can't say I am too surprised that I am having to wait this one out.codyal90 wrote:I'm still complete from 11/29. Anyone have anything similar?

Hey all, UNC upper-level here. Lemme know if you have any questions on UNC or life in Chapel Hill. I found this site modestly helpful when I was going through the app process...figured I'd pay it forward. I will give honest answers as to the school itself, but I can't speculate any better than y'all on admissions or scholarships. Best of luck to all of you!!

Re: UNC c/o 2017 (2013-2014)
I can honestly say that some of the best people that work at the law school work in the career development office. They say hi to you in the halls and chit-chat with you on a personal level regarding your summer job search (assuming, of course, you've made the initial effort to meet them). There are career specialists for multiple different fields, so there will likely be someone that is best suited to offer tailored advice to you. They usually keep a log of alumni and pass you names of local attorneys that can offer additional advice such as their thoughts on how student organizations, pro bono, journals, etc impacted their job search and which locales they found to be more promising than others (obviously this is a great way to network as well). The CDO also hosts multiple events throughout the year. We just had one this week where 1Ls could meet and discuss with upper levels about how they found their summer jobs, what they did, and how they liked them. This was especially good since much of your advice does come from upper levels but it's often difficult to approach them since you won't have any classes with them. The CDO also emails a weekly newsletter to keep you updated on a host of job opportunities and relevant deadlines. Some of the other events they have that I can think of off the top of my head: resume clinic, "mock" interviews with both CDO reps as well as real practicing attorneys before you do actual interviews, several "meet and greet" events with local attorneys, and the usual on-campus interview (OCI) programs. They also set you up with off-campus interview programs as well.NoDayButToday wrote:Thanks for your offer! How do you feel about career services at UNC?Tarheel831 wrote:Hey all, UNC upper-level here. There's always something you don't particularly care for and may wish to change about your school, but the CDO certainly isn't one of them. I think they may even take it personally if you end up struggling to find a summer job. They'll give you a wealth of advice and notices for job opportunities, but it will only carry you as far as you let it....you do have to act on their advice and put your own work into it as well. Finding summer work is stressful for essentially all law students, especially since you'll also be trying to keep your head above water with your coursework at the same time.....don't be fooled by those that say job searching was easy for them (frankly, they're just douchebags). You can't talk about jobs with the CDO for the first several months of law school (that's the rule everywhere), but I still highly recommend meeting them on a personal level if/when you get here.

Re: UNC c/o 2017 (2013-2014)
If you've visited the law school, you'll notice a couple of things right away. The law building is tucked in a corner of the campus where there is almost zero parking (an issue at most universities, so nothing new). That said, there's probably one of the best bus systems I've seen in any town right here in Chapel Hill. There are park and walk lots too, and I think one is actually pretty close to the law school (I don't drive a car to class). The building itself is a bit old and built with state funds rather than Harvard-level alumni trust money. If luxurious and fancy is your thing, I'd look elsewhere....though the grounds and surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. I also don't care much for UNC's course selection process. Right at the end of the year and just a couple of weeks away from exams, you have to turn your attention to registering for the next year's classes. It's an online rat race and some classes can literally fill within minutes...so you need to have backup plans. 2Ls go the day before 1Ls, so some classes could be full before you're even allowed to register. I didn't have any of these registration problems, but I'd imagine I would get pretty damn frustrated if it did happen. UNC also splits the 1L class into 3 "colleges." You'll take all your 1L classes with the same college. So you'll get to know 1/3 of your 1L class pretty good, but at least for the first few months, it's pretty hard to meet the other 2/3 of your class. Some people like this setup and others don't. But one nice thing that UNC does for 1L classes is that one of the first semester classes is a small-section class where there's only ~25 or 30 students. When you first get to law school, it can be very intimidating getting drilled by the prof in front of 85 other students in a large lecture hall. Having the small section group in a small classroom for your first semester really helps you build some confidence and figure out what the hell you're even supposed to do.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
