Received an email just now. Honors program does have a hard 165 cutoff. However, I was informed that my credentials put me in strong contention for a scholarship and to expect a general admission decision (one presumably with money included) in late February.

While it was a nice, and leading, email, now I have to wait three weeks to see if I've been admitted after that!

What is Kent like (professors, classes, classrooms, students)? Is it as cut throat as other schools?

My info is coming from someone who graduated in 2011, when things were at or near their worst in the legal market. Kent has some name recognition in Chicago, but it is still extremely tough. In particular, some of the Patent Boutiques seem to look for Kent grads and generally those in top 5% to 10% have successful outcomes. Below that, which is a huge number, it is still a huge crapshoot. Some may remember the unemployed EIC of the law review. He is now at Kirkland, but he is very much the minority. Even though he was EIC he was still in the top third or so. Grades seem to matter a lot. Those outside the top 10% are generally in smaller firms, doing some local prosecution or defense etc. In my year a few got picked up for JAG (2-3 Army, 2 AF, 1 Navy) if I remember correctly.

I think there is somewhat of a myth that students are cutthroat. I think everyone wants to do their best and will oiley work much harder (particularly in 1L year) than they may have in undergrad. However, I never saw or heard of anyone engaging in anything underhanded. Moreover, I found that upperclassmen who CALI'd a course were often happy to share their outlines.

The building is relatively new and quite pretty. It definitely does not have a college feel at all though. It is one building in the middle of the city. Only the law school and business school are in the building. You have to travel a little bit to get to some of the more pleasant areas of the city to hang out in. The school is very much in the business district.

Professors, for the overwhelming most part, are great. Very accessible, I never had any issues or heard of professors turning in grades late or reusing tests.

Bottom line, Kent is a great school. But, and it is a huge but, it is incredibly expensive. I think tuition is somewhere near 40k a year. While Chicago is not as expensive as NY it is still pricey. I would think long and hard about attending without a scholarship. Also, a significant number of students did lose their scholarships in my year. When I attended, the typical scholarship stip required a 3.25, with Kent's first year curve I think that worked out to approx top 25%. They may have changed things though.

I'd love to go to school in Chicago, but with the financial aspect in mind, I am wary. I did get a 10,000 scholarship with no stipulation other than having to attend classes at the school (which, I mean, I'd obviously be doing). That will decrease the cost a bit, but it is still a lot.
