My decision letter got mailed today as well. I'm really excited since I just put in my application last week. That was a quick turnaround. I must have caught them right before a rolling date.

Cutecarmel is right on target. I'm with her on your guys' post. There seems to be a lot of trash-talking of South Carolina, and I wish people would actually experience the school and the lawyer community before posting about it.

I haven't seen any trash talking. Insular and South Carolina go hand in hand. You can look back at threads about SC in years past and you'll see the word insular used over and over again. Even my professors have warned me its tough getting a law job around here. Lots of people who have made these comments actually live in this state, so believe what you want.

And eandy was just being honest and truthful in saying that S. Carolina has gone down hill over the years, dropping out of Tier 2 completely usually happens for a reason, and I even had an alumni tell me just recently that they think the quality of the school has gone down a lot in the last ten years or so.

The bottom line is that applicants should visit and make their decision based on their own experiences rather than what the internet says. The poster could be perfectly correct, but often people give information based on what they've heard others say rather than what they learned for themselves.

I gave my opinion based on being from the state,working in multiple law firms within it, and job searching myself within the state. You don't have to listen to me if you don't want to, but I wouldn't call my opinion a "random internet opinion."

Ok, let me clarify a few things before we all get our feathers up in a ruffle here. I would have posted earlier, but I've been out and about doing stuff.

Eandy, I appreciated your opinion and took note of it. You were not one of the people I was referring to as trash talking it.

I apologize if I gave the impression I said you were trash-talking, but that was not my intention. That material occurred elsewhere. I have noticed a lot of negative attitudes towards it, some of which I think I can safely dismiss as wanderlust in younger applicants. Some of it I can't, and I think that Eandy's post and tfleming9 in the other thread have been especially useful.

Regardless. It's too much of a risk for me. I can't put myself and my family through the kind of burden that a degree from South Carolina might give me if I have no job prospects in the state because I'm a yankee (not a proud one, mind you).

Calm down. Your opinion could be 100% correct, I'm not debating with you on that (or anything for that matter). That is not the issue. Its a good skill not to just blindly trust what other people say without making the effort to verify the information or form your own opinions. If SC is my top choice school and I look on this site and say, "oh, someone says SC is insular, I guess I can't go" that would be foolish.

Admitted today with OOS scholarship. Does anyone know anything about establishing residency in South Carolina?

You have to have lived there for at least a year. They can reevaluate your resident status every six months. You can call the residency department for more...let me find the link.

The woman I got when I asked was nice but was only a grad assistant. You may have to be persistent.

Thanks for your help. Unlike North Carolina, it looks like South Carolina is not extremely difficult to establish residency.

Having a driver's license and vehicle registration plus voter card before school even starts would be very useful. You could tell them that you plan to take the South Carolina Bar exam and intend to stay after completing your schooling. Also, talk to other students and so on when you're in there to see what they did or do. Most of the people I met while on the tour were from out-of-state, actually.

I am leaning that way as well, but I am holding off making a decision until closer to the deposit cutoff.

Since I am married, I think that as a spouse of a tax paying full time worker, I will be able to establish residency in 12 months.

They're a public university, and from what I understand, they're pretty generous. A lot of out-of-state students get instate tuition as a scholarship. You can find the numbers on their LSAC law school info.

I got instate tuition (2.95, 168) and tried to negotiate for more based on a roughly 3/4 scholarship at Alabama. No dice. Its too bad. I went to Clemson for undergrad and would like to live in South Carolina, but USC jr. is just to much $ for the risk.

Here's what I understand about their scholarships from the letter they sent me:

They hand out out of state/instate scholarships with letters of admittance. I'm guessing they do this based on grades, quality of application or possibly a first-come, first-serve basis.

I was informed that they would determine merit scholarships in early march, after most applications had been received. The Committee on Admissions determines this, which I understand is professors and administrators.

Incidently, they have an admitted student day on March 24th.

I know this wasn't directed to me, but I received full tuition in my acceptance letter as an in-state.

It appears dolfan0516 is out of state, so I guess they are awarding full tuition to both at this point.

No stips in my offer, but I'm going to call to make sure.

OOS. Said deans scholarship and will be covered by combo of in state tuition waiver and other merit aid that will cover full amount of tuition each year. Not a specific set $$ amount
