Right. But i know the first batch of admissions went out this past week, so I'm speaking to whoever stumbles across this.

I'm still a hopeful, but if you don't mind me asking...
What do you feel the job prospects would be for someone who finishes at median?

Re: University of Minnesota applicants 2011-12 cycle (c/o 2015)
Well, we report by a quartile system. If you're in the top half, you'll have a solid crack at a big law, corps, government jobs, small/medium firms, JAG... you name it. If you're in one of the bottom quartiles, things will of course be more limited. I have several friends who have graduated around the median and have great jobs; I can even think of one who was in the 4th quartile who got a gig in DC working for the government... but I also know a couple graduates who are still looking. With that said, we really do dominate this market. I know many more people who graduated from one of the other three local schools that are still unemployed than I do UMN graduates without jobs.ThreeRivers wrote:I'm still a hopeful, but if you don't mind me asking...

I'm in!
I'm just wondering about housing-where do most law students live? Other than the library ha ha
Do you know anything about GrandMarc (the one right across the street?)

First of all, don't even JOKE about living at the library.

Most students live in Uptown or Dinkytown. Dinkytown is very undergrad-ish and I'd suggest avoiding it for that reason - but it is very close. Uptown has some great express busses that zip to the law school in less than 10 minutes. There's also a good nightlife, coffee shop, and artsy scene there. I'm not a huge fan of the traffic and parking situation in Uptown though. I live downtown; I LOVE where I'm at and I have a 8 minute drive to school (I could take the bus, but I don't).
My personal opinion is that if you live at GrandMarc, you live at the law school. I'd really recommend living elsewhere. But, I do know several people who lived at GrandMarc and liked it. I guess it's a personal preference thing. I think it's also ridiculously overpriced for what you get, but I know a lot of people really liked that convenience.
Here's the rest of my advice: Avoid most suburbs unless you have a car and are used to driving in all kinds of weather/traffic. Also avoid St. Paul unless its along Como Ave and you have a car. Avoid North Mpls for lots of reasons. Northeast Mpls (tight to the river, especially) is pretty awesome. You should definitely look into that whether you have a car or will be taking the bus.

As a follow-up, yes. Our Admissions Director, Nick Wallace, generally calls every admit.DonnaDraper wrote:How does U of M do decisions? Snail mail?

Hey Josh,
I was just wondering about the social/bar scene in Minnesota. Also, I got in ED and I'm coming from California, so do you have any tips for adjusting to the weather?
Thanks.

Congrats on the ED Admission! Believe it or not, something like 20% of my class is from California. I know many people from there who love this place so much they're staying. Sure, it can be an adjustment to deal with the winter weather in December-February, but this is easily one of the most gorgeous areas of the country for most of the year. There's a LOT to keep you warm and occupied in the winter, not to mention the hundreds of things you can do the rest of the year. Grab a show at one of the dozens of theaters (the coolest is the Guthrie: http://www.guthrietheater.org/), catch a game at Target field (where I actually have season tickets) or one of the other professional sports housed here. If you'd like, Ill PM you the name and email addresses of a few Californians who've not only survived a few years here, but like it.aten2080 wrote:Hey Josh,

The social scene is truly phenomenal and, truth be told, the reason I live downtown. I regularly hang out with lawyers, law students and others at all types of bars, restaurants and various other venues. I met my current roommate at a bar while studying for Con Law, actually.

Mine did not update today, but updated on 12/2. I hope that means I am involved in hearing back soon. Probs not tho. According to LSN, above a 169 at U of M means most likely Waitlist
