If you can handle the cold, and being one of only 20 or so african-americans in the law school, the obvious choice is Notre Dame.

Yes, I attended the cocktail reception at Fried and Frank. Even though I don't plan on attending Howard, I'm glad I went. I made some great connections with the associates that were present.
Also, the current Howard students seem VERY enthusiastic about the program and were not shy about suggesting I attend as well. I even met two individuals who chose Howard Law over T6 law schools!

For all of those who are worried about paying a large amount in rent when attending Howard, please do not fear. I live less than a mile (you could walk if you had 20 min) away from the main campus. Howard's Law school is in Van Ness, near one of the most expensive streets to live on. Do not try to move there unless you are willing to pay 1700 to 2300 a month for rent for a single room. My rent is $1150 and I split that with one person. You can find cheaper apartments but do not expect to find them in commercial apartment buildings. People rent houses, basement apartments, and rooms for at most $800 per person. You can find inexpensive living in areas like Potomac Avenue, Stadium Amory, Columbia Heights (sometimes), Silver Spring, Largo, Eckington, Takoma (Maryland and DC), and Brookland. For the most part these aren't areas in the N.W (which is where Howard Law is located) they are in the N.E or the safer part of S.E. All of these places have some amount of crime but even the "pristine" areas have purse snatchings and break-ins because people know where to find people with nice things.

Kind of...You could live at a place called "Fort Totten Metro Station". They run pretty good deals but they are on the other side of the red line. The apartment is very nice but management is...well like the Howard Hospital (if you have ever been to one, you will know what I mean). Slightly unprofessional. I used to live there.Shot007 wrote:So you're saying its either expensive and safe or cheap and unsafe??

It's a major city but DC cops aren't all that bad. They are on pretty good cops. What is dangerous is walking and riding bikes in dc! Drivers here are crazy. You can find a cheap apartment if you a) move further from metro stop and b) don't choose the socially hip places c) find a roommate and d) stay away from commercial apartment buildings. There are real estate companies here that will find you and apartment for free and charge the building you sign with. You can also call the Washington Post and request a copy of the "Express" and there are apartments listed in them that are on the inexpensive side. Please don't let that keep you from Howard.

Anyone who is going to HUSL looking for apartment and possible roommate and who doesn't mind living in SE DC about 15 minutes from campus on the train send me a message...
Im thinking about moving in around mid July - first week of August.
My math say I can afford 1100 by myself but Im not trying to get down like that. I was thinking more like 5/600 a person...

Hey heavyliesthehead, I'm interested in finding a roomate too in DC near a metro (red line ideally). You already had a place in mind in SE? I worked in DC for a few months and know a little bit about SE. I was looking more towards end of July, early August. I'm also from Chicago too. Let me know

I am up to that. I need a good deal, or else I can't see myself going to Howard...heavyliesthehead wrote:Anyone who is going to HUSL looking for apartment and possible roommate and who doesn't mind living in SE DC about 15 minutes from campus on the train send me a message...

I have never been to DC, so I need to know the good places to look & the good deals that exist in the city. I feel like I can afford similar amounts to those you posted

You can still do great things outside of a t20, don't be a tool.hiromoto45 wrote:It has been advised that if you are an AA URM its T14 (maybe T20) or Howard or bust. So I think Howard qualifies as a TLS on here too.

I would like to move in the beginning of August, like August 1st. I haven't begun looking for a place yet, but I was planning on looking actively sometime in June.Shot007 wrote:When are u planning on moving in, and did you start looking as yet -- I am also interested in finding a placemanwitaplan wrote:Anyone look for a roommate? Congrats and Good Luck to everyone.

Interesting article in The National Law Journal(Feb 2010):
The Go-To Schools
Law schools with the highest percentages of graduates hired by NLJ 250 firms.

Looking for roommate who doesn't mind paying a little over a thousand a month to stay close near the law school or live in a nice part of MD.
