Re: U Iowa 2010 App Cycle
Well, if it helps at all, I made the choice to turn down a full ride and significant money elsewhere to attend Iowa. However, this is in large part due to the fact that I don't really know where I'd like to practice.confused2013 wrote:Hi All,
I have been admitted to quite a few schools, Iowa being one of them. I have about five full-ride offers to T3 and T4 schools, with some money in the top tier, and a few other random scholarships.
I visited U of Iowa last week. All staff members including the Associate Dean of Admissions were very helpful. Additionally, Iowa boasts many impressive statistics (99% job placement rate, 99% retention rate, 93% bar passage rate) and on top of that, is #26 in the nation (which I'm sure we were all aware of). I wanted to get some advice/answers about the benefit of attending a top law school and paying for that versus going for relatively cheap/free at another lower tiered institution. My goal is to end up as a corporate lawyer somewhere in the Chicagoland area.
Any advice or input anyone may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Called admissions office today to RSVP to ASD. Asked about scholarships - not being considered. Bummer. Crossing fingers for need-based aid.

I applied late January and still haven't heard anything. Is this normal? It seems like a long time considering I applied to other schools later and have heard from them already.

Iowa does command a lot of respect in the Chicago market. With the choices you have listed I would go with Iowa. Good luck making that decision.

In the last few days I have received an email from a 2L, a graduate, and a professor. More schools should be like this!

Cedar Rapids is by far the closest, only about 15 minutes away from Iowa City.dt22 wrote:I've never used the Moline route, so can't speak for it...DSM is small and easy to get around in. It will take less than 2 hrs to get to IC in good weather...There are 2 malls on the way if you need to waste time due to an early flight, etc.Padimud wrote:Cedar Rapids in closest. Moline, IL is an hour away. Des Moines is 2 hours away. I flew in via Moline, IL last week but would recommend going another route as Moline only flies out to a few cities and it seemed that everything was delayed (I missed a connection and spent the night in Atlanta). Go Des Moines and drive in my opinion.xeckosk8trx wrote:In at Iowa!!! Feels great to join the crew. Is anyone going to the admitted students day meeting on March 25-26th? What is the nearest airport to U of Iowa?
Thanks.

While bummed, I cannot even pretend to be surprised. My GPA, despite an upward trend, does not shimmer, and my LSAT wasn't great (which sucks because my practice tests were way better). Just holding out for need based aid.robin600 wrote:Yay! I'm totally down I will be there, driving as well!JOThompson wrote:I'll be arriving Thursday and leaving Saturday. Do you at least qualify for the resident tuition rate?

Nope. I'd have to wait and get an RA my second and third years. Here's to holding out for need based grants and scholarships.evilxs wrote:Do you at least qualify for the resident tuition rate?

So, very strange occurrence. I had long ago lost my ID/password mailing, and thus had never logged onto status checker. I had the urge to call today and ask about getting my ID and password e-mailed, and upon being connected was told that they had actually decided today. Admit!
Now to wait on scholarship information (if any).

Re: U Iowa 2010 App Cycle
Thanks, Jerome. I turned in my app in late January and received an email with my HawkID. The app was listed as "In Progress." Then in late Feb I received an email that my application had been received. Still shows as in progress. Maybe it'll take three weeks from that most recent email...

Re: U Iowa 2010 App Cycle
Some do, some don't. I know that some of the people here have top 1/3 of class and/or 3.0 GPA requirement. With that said, I received a full tuition scholarship with no stipulations (other than being an RA for my 2L and 3L). Not really sure why there's a difference though.sebastian0622 wrote:Also, does Iowa have a GPA requirement to maintain merit-based aid?

Four schools left to hear from and a visit or two to take, but getting close to decision time.
