Hi, sorry a noob question:

UVA gave me an unsolicited fee waiver. I applied ED., waitlisted a few days ago. (btw, it took them 17 calendar days to hear back...I thought that unless explicitly stated in the contract, a "day" means "calendar day" not business days? I might be wrong, please someone who knows correct me. I digress...) Anyhow, the WL email says that "[w]e are able to offer you a place on our waitlist, and will review your application again during May 2015."

Is it necessary that I communicate my acceptance to their offer to stay on the WL, or is it understood that I am accepting the offer unless I withdraw my application

From the wording you posted here, it sounds like they will assume you want to be on the waitlist unless you withdraw. Unless it specifically told you to take action elsewhere in the email, I think you're probably fine.

Mine discussed an invitation to be on their wait list. I sent them an email accepting their offer to be on said wait list, and got a nice email in response thanking me.

+1 . Went complete in late October and still haven't heard anything. I'm pretty positive I'm a certain ding, so I'm not sure why this is taking so long. However, I'm in state, so perhaps they are holding on to in state people to be sure they meet whatever quota they have (I've heard rumors that around 40% have to be VA residents?).

Submitted late October and interviewed 1st week of December and no word since so was def. expecting ding/WL, but since I survived this round of dings/WL would anyone like to speculate on why

I'm approaching the 4 month mark. I'm a splitter so pretty much half the schools I applied to are treating me to radio silence. Maybe holding off until they have an idea of whether they want my LSAT score? Though after the recent wave of WL/dings and their numbers I'm expecting a ding from UVA soon.

Almost 4 months here too. At / above 75th for both GPA and LSAT. No why UVA.
Wasn't initially a YP candidate until the September score though. That's why I didn't write a Why UVA and now this happens. Sigh.
