Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
Intuitively this makes sense, although some schools actually seem to be taking longer to make decisions. Cornell has been downright goofy this cycle and is either going to try and catch a bunch of big fish by throwing tons of money at them or they just have no idea what this cycle will bring and don't know what to do because they have not been accepting the types of candidates that you would think would be their bread and butter (aka around their medians). Duke is also quick to (soft) waitlist people, at least lately. Georgetown has been deferring a lot, although that might be business as usual for them, I'm not sure. Finally NYU has accepted less RD people to this point than they have in the past. Anyway this cycle is kind of crazy and it would not surprise me if an unpredictable school like Berkeley acts even more unpredictable than usual.Regulus wrote:Last cycle the announcement appears to have been on 12/12 (Monday) according to LSN... With the 24.6% drop in applications around the board, you figure that it would be taking schools less time to review everything they've received. I guess we'll find out soon enough, though.djwjddl wrote:Only 5 so far (according to LSN) for what's supposed to be the highest acceptance week if we're relying on last cycle's data. Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
Posted this elsewhere, but maybe this is the more fitting thread:
Congrats to all the recent admits! I'm still in shock that I was admitted, as Berkeley has always been that dream school to me. But after going through last years thread, I'm disheartened about the chances of meaningful financial aid and scholarships. I can't attend at sticker, like many here, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of things that can be done to increase aid chances?
Are there admits who think they'll be biting the bullet and going regardless of aid? And pursuing Public interest? Maybe I just need a hug, and need to stop looking at beautiful Berkeley pictures..

The pictures aren't what make me go, but I'd easily go at sticker. It would keep my in CA, I LOVE their program, and job prospects make it worth it out of UCB.

Yup, I suspect the same. When they realize that isn't happening, they'll be all "OH HAI COME 2 R SCHOOL PLZ."Wormfather wrote:Schools, Berkeley included, are praying that somehow, some way everyone who took the December administration broke 170.

To make an analogy of this situation, this is Christmas Eve for us and painful probably until around the end of January, then from then until April CHRISTMAS MORNING Y'ALL, Santa's gonna be throwing Wiis and houses and cars out of his sack to get us to come.shntn wrote:Yup, I suspect the same. Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
But they'd have to shrink it at the bottom end of the spectrum if they're to maintain medians, meaning that they'd be taking fewer of the people who would pay full tuition while taking the same number (or more) of the people they'll probably have to hurl money at to snag. I'm no Romney, but the math seems unfavorable from a business perspective.Regulus wrote:Then again..... there is always the option of schools simply lowering their class sizes to maintain their medians.![]()

Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
I don't really think that will happen and if it does, it won't be significant. The number of faculty they have is part of the ranking as well and if they reduce class size, they have to reduce faculty or make some other significant cuts to the budget. Not to mention that UC is a public school and therefore must use their money in very specific ways. All schools are going to be impacted by the reduced applicant pool and they will have no choice but to expand the number of acceptances to remain competitive.Regulus wrote:Then again..... there is always the option of schools simply lowering their class sizes to maintain their medians.![]()

You shouldn't have anything to worry about on that front. You have great numbers and just need to stay positive. We all know Berkeley has the most unpredictable admissions outside of YS. Just sit back, relax, and stop trying to figure out their system. Many have tried, all have failed. Just accept it as it is

Thank you very much for spending the time to do this!Regulus wrote:Weekly Comparison of Berkeley Applicants on LSN (December 5, 2012 vs December 12, 2012):

75th Percentile GPA: 3.96 => 3.95 (-0.01)
As you can see, there has been almost no movement in Berkeley's standards for accepted applicants thus far. Hopefully the "dip" for splitters and reverse splitters starts soon...

Any accepted people get anything in the mail yet? The e-mail said we'd be getting a formal acceptance in the mail, and I want to hold something that will make me feel better about still waiting for ten other schools.
