If it says Amount Due $0.00, that's normal.

I stumbled upon this thread while searching for something else. I remembered I was in y'all's position at about the same time last year. I'll try to give my 2 cents about the wisdom of choosing SCU and law school in general, for what its worth.

For starters, I think SCU is a decent law school. It has some exceptional professors and some quality students. It is the 84th ranked law school according to USNews (2011). Somewhat reluctant to admit this, but I think the the ranking is probably just for this school. It is an average law school in the whole scheme of things.

Like many of you, I also had other choices. I could've gone to a top 30 school. Part of the reason for choosing SCU is scholarship, part of it was its close proximity (I live nearby). I didn't bother to apply to Hastings or Davis, although my numbers were good enough for both, because I'd been to Hastings many times in the past for various reasons, and I just hated the area. Hastings' ranking was not high enough for me to subject myself to that type of suffering for 3 years. As for Davis, it's just way out there in the middle of nowhere. It's certainly a better school, but its regional placement is not significantly better than SCU.

SCU's single most obvious advantage over other higher ranked law schools is its location. The law school is well-connected in the local legal sector, public and private. People may think we have to compete with SLS, Cal, UCH, UCD, etc., but that's only half the truth. Our paths don't really cross with SLS, and Cal students. Most SLS students shoot for federal clerkships, and biglaw. Cal students are right behind Stanford in that regard. They both think nationally. We compete more often with Hastings and USF for the many of the legal jobs. SCU is well-established in the courts and the DA's office. It's well-represented in the mid-level law firms. Business communities also employ a large number of SCU graduates.

That said, there is also a harsh side of reality that you must prepare for. Many SCU graduates do not find legal work. Some probably can't find any respectable work regardless of field. There are many reasons for that. The most obvious one should be that we're an average law school. Students who come here are on average - 'average'. Contrary to perception, most students here were not engineers. I'd say the vast majority of students at SCU are liberal arts majors. Most of them had bleak job prospects before they came here. If you want to find legal work, you must work hard and try to graduate at least in the top 50%.

Heres the first paragraph from the letter:
"Congratulations! I am pleased to inform you that a place is being held for you in the Full-Time Division of the Shcool of Law beginning in the fall 2011 semester. The School of Law's Committee on Admissions is impressed with your potential as a law student and a prospective memeber of the legal profession. We are extremely proud of our students and alumni and believe you have the credentials and ambition to join this community."

The next paragraph is them trying to convince us why we should join the ranks of Santa Clara Law; after, there is information about visiting and then the same information you posted about deposits. ("Please reserve your place in the Santa Clara law class by sending a non-refundable seat deposit of $200.00 to the Office of Admissions by April 23, 2011. this is a firm date by which the deposit must be received, not postmarked, or your seat in the class will be forfeited. A second deposit of $500.00 will be due by June 1.") I can confirm that the first deposit is due by April 23, 2011 NOT April 1, so for everyone who still hasn't heard back yet, I wouldn't completely give up hope yet, since there's still about a month left.

As for sending an admissions packet, my best guess would be to conserve paper, because of the significant percentage of people who are accepted but decide to decline. I does make more sense to hold off on printing admissions packet and sending it off until you say that you're coming. But anyways, I wouldn't be too concerned, sUkNoIrzTforEall. My letter was dated March 23, so yours was probably postmarked on the 25th and on its way to you right now. ^_~

I think I'm going to be withdrawing come Monday and freeing up $7500 in scholly money. After russell's long post about the depressing reality of SCU combined with not wanting to be in debt to piece of shit greed-sters for the rest of my life; I think I'll just go in-state for half the cost, and just pray I get lucky and maybe one day get a job in CA. (I know that's what everyone advises against, but being stuck in cruddy NJ if my plan doesn't work out beats being stuck in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt in CA.)

SCU was my first choice until these boards but I wish you all luck getting into, choosing, and going to school. Aaaaand yadda yadda

No, they don't. Since you're applying for aid basically as a graduate student, you're automatically listed as an independent so you are not required to fill out your parents' information. I know that some law schools make you fill out parental information but I don't recall seeing anything of the sort from Santa Clara, so I think it's safe to say that you don't need it.

Accepted via snail mail. I'm out of town, but had my roommate read the letter to me over the phone. They offered me $13,500, not sure if that's per year or what.

It's renewable based on grades, from what I've been able to deduce (the Emery scholarship, no?).


Does not renew automatically, you have to apply to renew it, but "most" keep it.

FAFSA you do not if you are not claimed on your parents tax return. Ask your parents. (FAFSA is gov...not SCU.)

Quite a few of us, and I don't think anyone has gotten a favorable response. I sent my inquiry to Ms. Leach, who signed my admission and scholarship letter.
