So I'm an RD applicant and I've now been stuck in "application processing" limbo since 10/29. Looking around here and on LSN, that seems to be quite a bit longer than other applicants (RD & ED). NYU hasn't reached out to me about a missing item or anything and I've gone complete everywhere else without issue (except for Stanford who immediately requested an about a post-bacc language program transcript).

Am I hyper-paranoid or should I contact them first at this point? Anyone else have success in pushing processing along faster by reaching out to them first? I'd rather not bother them, but its hard to think this processing time is "normal" at this point.

NYU seems to go from Application Processing directly to Under Review. Several other posters have noted that they are still "Processing" despite submitting a while ago. It seems as though they may have sorted the piles to be put under review (ED and above both medians first) or it might just be totally random. I don't think you should worry about it yet though.

Glad I'm not the only one--RD processing since 10/28 here. I don't think we need to worry quite yet, but should you feel the inclination to call, please post anything you find out.

I read somewhere I THINK it may have been way further back in this thread that NYU makes a LOT of changes to application statuses (ie actually sends you a status checker if you sent in an app or changes your status from processing to UR) on the 1st and 15th of each month. So if you've been processing for a long time, there may be a change today.
(Anecdotally, this actually fits with me--I didn't get my status checker until the 15th but had sent it in the week before).

lol wow, i definitely would not do that. i don't get how any of you can think that the adcoms are so incompetent that your file somehow gets lost or MIA, or that you could "do anything for them." they're really busy and the last thing any of the offices want from an applicant is emails or phone calls asking them why things aren't moving along. my uncle works in MD admissions and he says his entire department gets really ticked off by students like that.

try not to be neurotic, and if you are (like I get) don't call the law schools about it. keep it on this forum.

I don't think they care that much. I called UW about a similar issue yesterday and they volunteered to resolve it right away.

Side note: NYU is just asking for people to bug them when they choose a status of "Application Processing" and then leave people at that status for more than a month. Almost every other school uses complete, which is much more reassuring.

Oh, hmm. Then I would guess it varies between office, but it's just something my uncle cautioned me about when he learned I was applying to law school. That's nice of UW to be that accommodating though. I just prefer to keep a low profile and not call the offices.

I did exactly what MST suggested and didn't out myself until the person I was speaking with asked for my last name (after offering to review my file for completeness).

If they seem perturbed I would definitely just find a polite way to say "Thank you for your time" and hang up.

Ok, well, so long as I'm not the only one, I guess I'll get my neuroticism under control and wait till the start of next week to bug them. For what it's worth, I'm above both medians, so I'm not too worried about being cast into some "Review in March" box of files, but -- based on Stanford's prior request for additional docs -- I was trying to gauge the possibility of my app sitting on some sort of "email about missing components if they don't arrive on their own in X weeks" pile. If that even exists. And getting my neuroticism under control in 3...2...

Don't worry. I submitted my application on 9/11, and I didn't get the status checker email until 11/9 (palindrome FTW)!

When I signed in to check my status, it said that I had been under review since October.

I had a similar problem. I submitted my ED application at the beginning of November, but didn't receive any emails whatsoever from the school. Called about a week later and confirmed they'd received my application and ED contract. By the end of November though, still no emails or status checker info. I emailed the office last night about this, and they promptly replied with an email with username and password for the status check. If you're concerned I don't think it'd do any harm to send them a polite inquiry. Good luck!

Those who charge predominantly broke-ass students $70-$100 just to apply really have no right to be "ticked off" about a few calls when they take months to get back to applicants. Their systems will take a long time regardless of how many calls they receive; getting mad about phone calls is like saying, "Stop pestering me, you are inhibiting my exploitation and dooming my inefficient process to even greater inefficiency!" The logical response is to make the process faster, not to get angry like a child. And the process could most assuredly be expedited, either with greater effort or additional personnel.

The reason it costs money to apply is because it costs money to hire someone to review your application and it limits the number of throw away applications. Contrary to popular belief I believe that they do in fact actually read each file at least once. Think of how long it must take Berkeley's admissions staff to read the 9000 applications they get each year.

Yes, I did think about that. The point is that they charge a demographic that generally doesn't have much money for a service that is extremely slow. In other words, they make you pay for more than you get. That they'd get angry that people want to know why their slow service is slow and whether they can do anything to accelerate the lengthy process is pretty egocentric.
